toyota tacoma engine oil

Hello
I have a 2005 tacoma, 2.7 4 banger. My father just bought a 2008 model. As far as I can tell, the exact same engine, however the specs for mine say 5w30 but dad's says 5w20 oil....what gives? should I use 5w20??

You can use 5W20 if you like w/o problems. You can use 5W30 if you like w/o problems. What OCI are you going to run? What driving conditions?

You can use either oil. I think 5w20 is a great choice.

I am new at this, so OCI is foreign to me but I think this is what you are asking. I run around 5,000 miles, stop and go traffic 10 miles of the trip, 60 miles round trip

Toyota TSB# EG018-06 says that 2TR-FE engine(4cyl, 2.7L)can use 5W-20 if it's 2006 or 2007 model. Yours is 2005. So, you should stick with 5w30.

Use the 5w-20. I used 5w30 on my first oil change and mileage immediatly went down 1 to 2 MPG. Also the motor does not seem as eager to rev . Can't wait to put the watery stuff back in.

You can go to a 0W-20 for even better fuel economy & better cold start performance according to the Toyota TSB.

Skoh, that TSB is for model years 2006 and newer, the OP has a model year 2005. His dad, however, could use the thinner oil.

More recently, Toyota announced 0W-20 across the board:

In the July 1, 2008 Edition of Flashpoint, ILMA has announced that Toyota has officially decided to switch the recommendation on engine oil for certain vehicles from SAE 5W20 and SAE 5W30 to SAE 0W20.

ILMA reports that these changes will affect all Toyota brands, including Toyota, Scion and Lexus. The change will also appear in owner's manuals.

I jut put Mobil 1 0w20 in my 99 Tacoma this morning. I plan to run it 6 months (all winter.)

Let me know hopw the 5vz does with it. I ran mobil 0w30 in my previous tacoma with that engine and it seemed to perform just fine with that.

I'll keep a close eye on the oil level and report any observations. Maybe I'll even splurge for a sample at the end of the 6 months.

Your Toyota dealer should have Toyota genuine 0W-20 as well - At least in quart bottles.

If more owners request 0W-20, the dealers may stock the 0W-20 in BULK and reduce the cost.
