In 2004 Toyota upgraded the ATF T-IV in the 5speed V8 transmission to WS ATF (World Standard) It can not be mixed with T-IV ATF. It is used in the 2004 Toyota 4runner V8/Lexus GX470/Lexus LX 470/Toyota Landcruiser. Change interval is 60K miles only if you tow with the vehicle, other wise the fluid does not require changing. Toyota claims there is no equal ATF produced. Anyone have any information on this new fluid? Don't worry guys I'm changing mine at 50K miles even though I don't tow. Figure I should change it 10K before my warranty expires just incase they were just kidding about the lifetime stuff

This is the first time I had heard of this. I would be interested in any information on this stuff also. Just bumping this one to the top to see if anyone knows anything about it.

Who makes the transmission?

The T-IV spec was for Aisin-Warner transmissions, and was variously described as JWS 3309, GM 9986195, Saab 3309, Volvo 1161540 and Audi G-055-025-AZ depending on what car with an Aisin-Warner you were driving.

There was a Toyota "WS" transmission back in the mid-80s that used "F" type ATF.

The advent of multiple narrow specifications on ATF is not in the consumer's best interests.

Aisin-Warner transmissions require different ATF depending on the model of the transmission. Some (mine) use Dexron-III. Others take the special ATF.

Red Line D4 is a suitable replacement for many of the special ATFs, but not all. I'm not aware of any aftermarket ATFs, including Amsoil, that meet some specs like Mercon-SP or Toyota WS.

I think that's been a done deal for at least the last four years. Start likin' it. But, what the heck, there's always Amsoil multi-use ATF that's qualified for every transmission (and gramma's lumbago, too).

What sucks is that noone knows the full specs for the fluid. This includes the SPIII, MerconV or SP, T-IV, WS, J/K/D-matics,...........

I was under the impression that the world standard spec is for dipstickless never service transmissions. If thats it, then I would bet that the boutique synths would perform well enough(possibly better with an added bottle of HFM additives).
As far as I'm concerned, no fluid is good forever.
If you are afraid, then just buy the OEM fluid and practice some sensible fluid change intervals.

From the looks of it, the newer 5/6 speed and manualmode automatics are recieving more and more specific fluid requirements.
Anyone who understands the shift pattern of the extra ratios compared to a standard 4-speed auto know that valve body cleanliness and clutch application need to be perfect to prevent a false shift(no gear or in between shifts). These fluids tend to be friction modified for smoother shifts, have more consistent cold temp performance to prevent slow shifts which could be disastrous, and provide better high temp performance and deposit prevention. This is something that some of the synthetic boutique oils already had!
