Changed out the factory fill oil at 952 miles to this sample of Trop Artic, which I ran for 3,808 miles. Mobil 1 filter was used.

wow, toyota prius may save MPG by using the electric engine, but the engine side doesn't get hot enough to burn off the fuel dilution.

Every 5000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.

This isn't the first prius UOA with fuel dilution, many others prius owners have posted their UOA with fuel dilution as well. Just another thing to worry about I supppose that and the cost of those batteries.

It's showing OK fuel dilution, not even at the warning level (although flash point doesn't suggest great fuel dilution).

Karl Fischer (water) looks bad too.

Needs lots of big hills (with a bit of regen down the other side)

Flash of 305°F? Wow.....Oil thinned hugely....TBN hit prettty hard. Lots of fuel in there....how much by design? (I must ask)

All this said, first real oil change? Wear is pretty low for break in!(don't know if this engine is copper thrower or not, Si is up). One must wonder about engine break-in on a hybrid. Do they run so easy that cylinder glazing may occur? (just a thought)

Pablo,
it's reasonably difficult to get a long loaded period on a Prius without the aid of a test-track or topography

Guys,

I woke up at 4:45 this morning, so I'm a bit tired, but I don't see why you guys suggest the oil is shot!?!? The flash point is low due to the obvious fuel, but other than that, this sample looks pretty decent minding the engine doesn't even have 5k miles on it. Water is likely from the on/off cycles these engines see.....no fault on the oil though.
TBN is still strong, wear looks good for the miles and the user could easily have gone to 5k miles.
What am I missing?

Rick

EDIT: Just noticed the viscosity.....it did drop a ton! What's the virgin viscosity on this oil? Anyway, again, fuel is to blame here. Lastly, with that much water in there, I bet this is mostly city driving. The winter months are going to be even harsher on this engine.

I wake up at 3:45 every day. Vis, water, flash point, Si, fuel....say no more. Bye-bye oil.

This is all a design problem though...oil is still serviceable and protecting against wear.
Toyota engines do shed a lot of silicon for the first 10k miles.....not a big deal.

I'm guessing around 9pm for pablo.

I get up at 6 and go to bed between 10-11 and that still isnt enough for me.

Dont know how you guys do it. I guess what they say is true, "The older you get the less sleep you need"

Yes, the 1NZ-FXE is notorious for fuel dilution. That's the "bad" news. Mine does it too. On the other hand, it doesn't seem to have much impact on the wear metals, as you might expect, if it really reached the point at which the oil could no longer effectively keep metal parts separated.

It is interesting (to me anyway...) to note that over the last couple years, while Toyota has spec-ed xw-20 oils for past and present engines, there's a special TSB for the Prius that declares that it's an exception, and shall stay with 5w-30 as the preferred oil. I think I see why they've done this.

Oh yeah, one more thing, CH, I've had my Prius a little less than 18 months. In that time, my fuel savings compared to the G-35 I traded could have paid for almost TWO new traction batteries (a brand new one, not a refurb, is $2300). Nope, I'm not worrying about my battery at all.

ekpolk,

What? You traded your G35 for a Prius? Did your homeowner's insurance premiums spike so dramatically that you felt the need to make up the savings on your fuel bill?

What's next? A G37 for a Yaris?

I also own a Prius which has a fuel dilution problem, the wear has been pretty good with both Mobil 1 0w20 and Biosyn 0w20. The battery has not been a problem and in Maine the warranty for the battery is 150,000 miles (most other states it is 100 or 120k). There have been few reports of early failure with these batteries, but at 200k who knows? At $3/ gallon and 50 mpg average fuel economy, thats $12000 in gas for a Prius and $20000 for a car getting 30 mpg, a savings of $8000 over 200,000 miles, enough for 3 battery packs.
