Toyota PickUP: Interference engine?

There is a 1992 Toyota Pickup for sale in my town. It has the V6. It is a 5-speed 4x4. Thing is the timing belt lost some tread or teeth and slipped and now the timing is off. Is this an interference engine? The guy wants $1800 bucks!

I think it is a bad buy. The truck has 192000 on it. Body is fair. Interior is fair. A buddy of mine keeps telling me to buy it. How much would a timing belt replacement cost on this motor?


I think $1800 if the truck were running, but like it is I think the price is too high. What do you guys think?

It's non. But I believe these motors are head gasket eaters.

I'd walk.........no wait, run from it!

I think he's a little proud. If it's not running well, there are no garauntees. That era of yoat v6's had an issue with overheated exhaust valves.

If the timing system fails the valves will touch the pistons. KABOOM!

You can still Kaboom a non-interference engine... It's harder to do but it is possible... Just thought I would put it out there...

If it had a 4cyl, it would be a good buy. The 22R engine are bulletproof engines.

Probably the owner never changed the timing belt. It should be on it's 3rd timing belt.

Don't buy it for that price. That truck should have the 3.0, which had head gasket problems. I think there was a fix for it, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

$1800 would be a fair price if the truck was a running four banger model.

I think toyota released a more improved head gasket to address the problem. But it still had problems.

My '90 4Runner has the 6cyl and it's still on its original headgasket...knocking on wood. Compression still strong on all 6 cylinders.

And since you can't drive it, who knows what else is lurking. The transmission might be slipping, a rod knock...

What people pay for high mileage Toyotas and Hondas has always had me scratching my head.

The headgasket should have been replaced on a campain I owned a 92 v6 truck My heart broke when it got rear ended and thus totaled I wasn't in it.If the truck was taken care of it should be a tough truck. Would the cost be at a shop or would you do it yourself? I have done my truck it is a fairly easy job as with any belt job a water pump and the idlers and tensioner should be replaced. Check the crank seal at this time if it is wet from oil and it is easy to replace .I pull the radiator then there is lots of room. Offer a $1000.00 since you are taking the risk.

My father has replaced three head gaskets on his 1990 4runner with 3L V6(same engine) and 150k currently. Two under Toyota's voluntary recall of the issue and the last on his dime.

Besides that issue(major $1200+) nothing has gone wrong with it in the 19 years of ownership. Everything works including power antenna.

Any used Toyota is automatically worth $1800 more than any used domestic vehicle in similar condition, just by being a Toyota.

Therefore, if this were a domestic vehicle, it's value would be $0.

No, it's worse than that. If it were a similar year / condition Chevy, Ford or Dodge pickup, he'd have to pay someone to haul it off.

Except for the nylon timing chain guides wearing through and killing motors...

I do believe when the guides wear out (after 250,000 freak'in miles by the way) that you get a weap of anti-freeze thru the hole you made, not a "killed" engine. The engineers were pretty smart... engines w/ belts are always non- interference as poor maintenance for these people is a planned event. Poster, don't buy this truck unless price is halfed, with current events a better deal can be had by you!
