Toyota Motor Oil

Hi,

I'm a newbie here, so I apologize if this had been discussed. I was at the Toyota dealer today, and I was surprised to see they sell Toyota brand 5w30 motor oil. The bottle said the oil was formulated specifically for Toyota engines.

I've searched around here, and I haven't found anybody who would claim they use Toyota oil, and I haven't seen any used oil analysis. Is this a particularly [censored] oil? I guess it is a conventional oil, but it may still be a good one.

You can buy higher quality oil for much less money at a Auto parts store.

I'm sure Toyota has Valvoline or somebody filling those bottles for them.

I was impressed the other day when I saw some Kohler 10w30 and some Briggs and Stratton Synthetic 10w30.

The Briggs Synthetic was pricey. Must have been Redline in the bottle!

I emailed Toyota down here and they said Caltex Havoline (= chevron/texaco in N.A.) supply the "Genuine" toyota motor oil (apparently "specially formulated for toyota engines". it is a semi=synthetic / synthetic blend SM ILSAC GF4 . I think it is as good as valvoline durablend.

Who knows what company fills them bottles. But i'll bet one things for sure it will be in their best interest and not yours.

You can definately get better oil for less money at walmart.

Last I heard, Mobil had the contract for Toyota oil in the USA.

Same thing at the Honda dealer the bottle of Honda oil says made by Exxon Mobil to Honda specs. Funny thing is none of the dealers use it that I have seen. Why bother if the dealers don!t use it? I can!t imagine they have a lot of people walk in and buy oil from them.

Same here, at least in California. I was told by the use Mobil 1 for regular oil changes...i would assume the individual bottles are the same.

Thanks for info. That's about what I thought. I bought Pennzoil Platinum for my oil change. I did buy their "genuine" oil filter though, as it was quite inexpensive.

It is Exxon Mobil specifically formulated for Toyota, I would recommend to use it if you are willing to pay the dealer price, beware if the dealer changes your oil because allot of dealers use their factory oil filters but install bulk oil of a different brand and sometimes a different grade and the customer is unaware of it because they will not disclose it unless asked, if you purchase it and do your own change as I do with Mopar then you can rest assured you know what is being installed in your engine.

That is because the dealership can buy bulk oil 275 gallons at a time for a very low price.

Anyway, don't bother with "OE Formulated" stuff that costs extra. Ordinary SM oil in a non-turbo Toyota or Honda is excellent. Or, buy Ford Motorcraft oil that is cheap but effective, even in stuff that isn't built by Ford.

I agree with that statement, in fact I have used Motocraft 5W20 Synthetic Blend Oil in the 2 oil changes I have done since dumping the factory fill.
