So that's what they meant by "Get the feeling!"

Hmm..I can get the feeling from my living room couch, and it won't cost me $400/month in car payments either!

You also gotta be careful not to buy a car thats too much fun. Thats extremely dangerous for the pocketbook.

First you buy it...then suddenly your taking all these backways, taking much longer to reach your destinations...you stop braking as much, and start figuring out how to optimally enter and exit a turn. Why? Why do people stand in line for 3 hours for a 15 second rollercoaster?

Next thing you know, you find local guys, with the same car you just bought in your area...you all start meeting up and exchanging ideas about the car, having bbq's (more driving, food expense).

Next thing you know your all at an "advanced driving event" (aka autox) and having the time of your life. Then suddenly your going every weekend, and money's being dumped into the fun car, to make it even more fun with modifications and such.

Suddenly your learning about cars, creating your own online forum, finding other forums, and learning about oil/additives/fluids. (What weirdo does that???

), and even considering doing full-on track events. And the irony of it all? The fun car you originally bought has now taught you how much FWD open-differential car's suck. Money gets shifted to the side for a nice near 50/50 balanced lightweight RWD or AWD future purchase

.

Its dangerous let me tell you. Just buy the most boring car you can find.

There are two extremes for car owners: those who drive cars out of necessity, and those who drive cars for fun.

Those who drive out of necessity tend to buy cars for their reliablility and low maintenance which save them money in the long run. Those who drive for fun tend to buy cars for their performance and image which cost them more money in the long run. Of course a lot of drivers try to find the balance and fall between these two extreme cases.

When I bought my Camry I drove the Civic, Accord, Corolla and Camry.

Between the Accord and the Camry I preferred the Accord. The engine was better in power and the sound it made. I'd almost call it superior. The Accord had crisper handling. The Camry softer ride. I bought the Camry because I got a much better price plus the vehicle would see mostly freeway commuting where the ride was a factor. Prices being equal or close-I'd go with the Accord

OTOH between the Civic and Corolla, the Corolla just seemed like a better car in general. Faster, larger, better put together, quieter.

Am I missing something here? I thought it didn't matter what you drove, it's what oil are you going to use and how often are you going to change it? Right?

I don't know what you guys are talking about boring vehicles. I have been driving Toyota trucks now for almost 20 years and they are far from boring. Throw my YZ 125 on the back and hit the trails. If I get tired of the wrist rocket crank the air and cruise the trails in the trucks.

Daily Drives:
-2003 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner XtraCab, 2.7 Liter , Mobil1 Synthetic SS 5W-30.
ODO 10500Miles.
-1995 Toyota 4-Runner 3.0 V6, Mobil1 Synthetic SS 10W-30.
ODO 91900 Miles.

However, I am saddened when I know that a very large percentage of the large SUVs are purchased for the reason that they offer protection from other vehicles. Oddly the occupants of cars in this thread suffer the most in those cases.
It's all for oneself with no regard to the consequence of another....... This mentality has pervaded a nation in their vehicle buying habits and global environment and politics.

Well said. The concern for external people while driving is a priority for Honda, even on their high performance sports cars. For example, they developed special hood and wiper hinge pivots that collapse during pedestrian impacts. Based on their research, these areas contribute to many of the injuries during impacts with pedestrians. Such respect for peoples lives.

Ironically, based on statistics here in the US, there were more deaths in SUVs then passenger vehicles. Ignorance may not be 'bliss' in this case.

This SUV obsession is really a psychological disease. Anyone who spends 60K on a Hummer to become 'socially accepted' while driving to Nordstrom are truly disturbed. I see it all over here in Seattle, more so in LA.

Thankfully, I am immune to this disease.

Anyway, I digress on this since this is a washed out topic and requires much more then bitching on a internet board to rectify...

That can get kind of expensive, too.

A Corolla ran into my BMW early yesterday morning. I think it was the impact that woke up the Corolla driver. This is for real, low speed, not much damage.

It's a matter of opinion.

To me Toyota= practical, quality, conservative.

I can tell you that driving the Ram is a much greater experience then any Toyota. It's a trade off sometimes Amkeer for performance and looks. If I wanted a car to get me from A to B with the least amount of trouble I would have kept the A1 Corolla Tank.

Wow, 50 posts!

I wasn't expecting much interest in my thread, but I'd like to thank all those who took their time to share their opinions. Your feedback really helped me make a decision.

I've decided to go with a Corolla.

I have one more thing to ask. I hope I'm not out of line doing so. I was wondering if someone here with a Carfax account would mind running a Vin number for me. I'd really appreciate it and if there's anyway I can repay the favour I will.

If you think you can give me a hand, please email at [email protected]

Once again, thanks so much.

Cheers

If you want something with a little more spice there is a new Corolla XRS with a 170hp engine and 6spd transmission.

I'm thinking about getting that when it's available as the Ford Fusion. I don't like integrated climate controls and radios, and I don't think the Fusion will have them.

The Fusion will also have green dashboard illumination, not orange. I prefer green.

I'd get the manual, not the ATX though.
