So I have a scratch down to the primer on my scion from a rock that hit my fender. No dent, just a gouge in the paint. Anyone have any good tips for using the touchup paint with the small brush to make it blend in well? The black gouge really stands out and is annoying me.

might be able to use the drcolorchip system. search for it online
fill in the scratches then you are going to have to carefully wet sand the area with 1500 to remove the excess paint and help blend in.Then use a mild polish or cleaner wax.If you have never wet sanded paint you should research a little maybe utube.

This. I've repaired chips and scratches this way and they are undetectable. You can actually slop the paint on heavy and wet sand the next day.

That is a good DIY. I personally do it a bit different.
I clean the area well, and go in the scratch with IPA unless I know it is super fresh.
I use a super tiny and fine paintbrush, tough the toothpick idea is good too. I keep a soft microfiber cloth handy.
I fill the scratch well, so it is filled completely. Let it sit for about a minute, then buff with the microfiber. Most of the paint will come off, but some color will be imparted. Repeat.
Layer by layer paint will be added. And I carefully remove it so it stays flat or low.
In the end, after curing, I'll use some scratch x type product to help blend, then after a few days at least, I wax it.

There is a product/process called Scratchwizard that claims to be able to fix deep scratches. Never tried so i have no idea if it works. I have my doubts.

I just watched both these videos and the first there is no way that repair will look good at all up close.The second there is a big high spot of paint right in the middle of the area.Without wet sanding or a cleaner/polish this is not going to give you any kind of good results.As long as you use a safe grit like 1500 and keep it wet with a little dish soap for lube.And use a backing pad and keep it flat you are going to be ok.As long as you dont go crazy by making the repair much higher then the original paint you wont have to do much wet sanding.
