I can not find the torque spec for the fill plug on my 1997 half ton GMC Sierra's transfer case. I recently changed the fluid and now the fill plug is leaking/seeping fluid from the bottom edge of the fill plug. I put some teflon tape on the threads and want to torque it to the proper spec to see if that helps stop the leak. Thanks!

It is a plug not a fastener so probably does not "Bottom out" to a torque value. to seal it use some permatex oil resistant gasket maker.

I'm pretty sure that's a tapered plug, don't wrench on those it can split the bung and going tighter doesn't stop the leak.
Tighten them firm that's all, just snug and a hair. as others have said thread sealer or yellow pipe tape is best for these.

Thanks! So I did try to tighten it up more to stop the leak. I used a standard size 1/2” drive ratchet. I was not pulling super hard but just firm pressure till is stopped turning. When I removed it too add the Teflon tape the plug came out nice and smooth and seemed normal. I don’t see any cracks in the aluminum(you can see what I saw in the above picture). Do you think it’s OK could I possibly caused any damage?

Teflon tape should seal it.

I did over fill it just a couple pumps with a had pump that fits on the gear oil bottle. Approximately 2 1/2 ounces came out until it stopped. So it was barley overfill and was like that for a few months till I noticed it leaking. Hopefully that did lot cause any damage.

Per Alldata, the torque spec for the Borg-Warner transfer case drain and fill plugs is 18 ft lbs. The torque spec for the New Venture Gear transfer case drain and fill plugs is 25 ft lbs.

No, I think its fine. Like I said just snug tight then a little more which sound like that's what you did, you have to be careful with torque specs when teflon tape, loctite of sealer is used as it can significantly alter the values.

They make thread sealers (permatex, locktite, etc) if you don't want to use teflon tape. I've used grease, antiseize, white teflon tape, yellow teflon tape and thread sealer without problem. I'd be a bit cautious about the gasket maker though.
