Topping-up M-1 with Dino oil?

Howdy,
I change the oil in our 1998 Grand Cherokee 4.0L (158,000 miles) and 2003 Land Rover Discovery (33,000 miles) every 5,000 miles using Mobil 1 and a Supertech filter.

Over the 5,000 miles the Grand Cherokee only consumes about 1/2 quart, but the Disco goes through a quart every 4,000 miles.

I have been topping them up with cheap conventional oil (Supertech), since I see it as a waste to pour a $4 quart of Mobil 1 into dirty oil that will be drained within 1,000 miles or so.

Do you see anything terrably wrong with doing this?

You might want to switch grades of oil to try and curb that consumption a little,not that it's terrible..

No worries, but what grades of M1 are you using?? With a quart in 4K on the Disco, I might want to question if you are using the right oil for the application. Doesn't the disco have a large sump and not really "require" synthetic??

I am using 5w30 in the Disco (6.1 qts). The manual specifies:
5w/30 (-22*F - 95*F)
5W/40 (-22*F - 122*F)
10W/40 (14*F - 122*F)

Synthetic is not used from the factory in this year Disco, I just like it. This summer I may switch to the M-1 Truck&SUV 5w-40, since this is the only thicker Mobil 1 Synthetic oil besides the 20w-50.

Maybe a 10W synthetic would be OK for the winter, such as the Mobil 1 10w30 I use in the Jeep.

Mobil Delvac 1, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, or any good 5W-40 might solve all the consumption issues. Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 is too thin for either imho anytime of year in your location.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is an option if the Winter should be abnormal.

Try it and maybe top up oil won't be an issue.

Delvac and Mobil 1 Truck and SUV are similar and are both synthetic. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, Truck/Sport Utility/Vehicle.

Many Jeep owners on the forum seem to favor 5W-40, Including Rotella T.

Mobil 1 5w30 just seem to be consumed at a more rapid rate in some engines.

Seeing as the cost is real close, I'd recommend you trying Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40 next time you change the oil in both of them. I think your consumption will go down and, unless you're a real short trip type, I don't believe it will sap any economy from your rides (no jeep is economical).

A cheaper alternative would be Rotella T synthetic (as others have suggested). I'm only 4k into a 10k run on it ..so my jury is still out on this bargain $13/gallon HDEO synthetic. I did a 12.5k on Delvac 1 and it was good probably for another 5k.

1 quart in 4,000 miles is normal or better then normal for an automotive engine. Your dino top off should not hurt anything. The only difference
the dino makes is a little more change in your pocket.

I had trouble with an oil leak on my suburban. I put Mobil 1 5W30 in it at about 95,000 miles and the leak developed about a year later. One time I needed to add a quart but like you I didn't want to put in the expensive oil when it was due for a change so I put in a quart of 10w30 Pennzoil After about a week it quite leaking and hasn't leaked since! Apparently the seal-swell characteristics were affected in a positive way. Now when it's low I'll add a little conventional oil. I don't know if this does anything or not but I have 160,000 on it now and there is no signs of leakage.

You can mix 10w30 and 15W-50. A 25-35% of 15W-50 should put you in the high 30 wt. class. A 50/50 gets you in the 40 wt. range.

Disco like many cars will have a little consumption while at low mileage.

Switch to Castrol GTX for 2 cycles(3k - 5k) and then go back to M1. Top off with dino.

As mentioned above A 5W/40 looks like it may be ideal for my application being that it covers the entire viscosity range in the owners manual.

I didn't see the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV at Costco/B-J's Wholesale; so I don't think I will be getting it for $23.99/case.

I just changed it with Mobil 1 5w30 a couple weeks ago, so the next change should be spring/summer, which could use heavier oil.

Hmmm... Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, Rotella-t "syn" (wal-mart), or Delvac-1 (which I don't recall seeing in any stores).

EDIT: the price looks to be about the same between Mobil Delvac 1 and Mobil 1 Truck and SUV; I would go with Mobil 1 Truck and SUV.

Can I run the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV longer than the rotella-t?

What would you guys think of simply using Mobil 1 0W-40 year-round? At 14.3cSt, it is considerably thicker at high temperatures than the Mobil 1 5w30, which should reduce oil consumption.

If your doing alot of hwy miles, you could go 5000oci with a good dino.

I would top-off with M1 (why dilute good oil?) and run it for at least 6,000 miles.
