Hey guys, my recent illness has gotten me thinking. I rarely take off work if I'm sick, I usually just take a few Advil or Day Quil and suffer through it. However, last Wednesday I more or less had no choice, as I woke up at 3 in the morning, and lets just say things weren't well. By the time I could call in around 10 I had thrown up 7 times, and almost passing out every time I stood up. I'm over that, but I'm still feeling the cold part of it today but not near bad enough to take off this afternoon (too bad) Anyway, where do you guys draw the line before you take the day off?

If I don't feel well, I don't go to work. Simple as that.

I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of PTO/sick days. It isn't fair to your coworkers to go to work sick.

Anything that involves non-stop coughing and constant nose clearing is my line in the sand. I wish others worked the same way. I had one person in my department that used to plan elaborate vacations so she couldn't "afford" to use any of her PTO being sick. She'd drag herself in and spend the day on the phone telling family and friends that she feels so bad and wishes she could have stayed home. Oh, and infected the rest of us, can't forget that part.

The sad thing is that the woman was a nurse -- if anyone, she should have known better...

If it's just a head cold; runny nose and sore throat, I go to work. If it's tummy trouble, I stay home.

I've had a lot of success in the last 3-4 years with suppressing the severity and duration of head colds by taking Zicam when I get the first scratchiness of a sore throat.

Ugh... 5 out of 6 of us in the household went through this all weekend.

There's no way I could do my job like this.

With my employer, they tell you flat out to stay home if you're ill with the flu, etc..

I had a boss one that said "If you aren't feeling well, come to work. If you're sick, stay at home". I have tried to follow that.

+1

Many places/jobs will simply can employees for not coming to work though. Just another example of passing their costs onto society.

Thanks man! I was feeling good enough the next day to go back to work so I'm thinking it was just a 24 hour bug, and now I've got a cold or something.

The last time that I insisted on working while taking DayQuil, I made some obvious mistakes in the database.

When my boss discovered them (with me sitting nearby), she made the statement... "Oh, and I'll bet you made those entries when you were taking DayQuil and just *had* to come to work..."

And the date on the entries proved it.

When it affects the quality of your work... stay home.

My shift starts at 5 am, and to fill it would require pulling the guy who finishes at midnight.

I try and come in. They appreciate it even if I only get the "core" work done. If I'm contagious I let people know and try to stay on one computer terminal which gets lysol-wiped. Not a perfect solution.

If I'm having a runny nose, I'll suck it up with the appropriate meds. A fever or other illness that I could pass around, I'll stay home. Considering that my job is really a team endeavor, coming in sick and making bad decisions that could get somebody hurt is frowned upon.

I work from home and the running joke in my group is you can only take a sick day if you are on your way to the ER. My boss- only person to take an official sick day did it and called as he was going to leave for ER for emergency appendectomy.

But if I worked in an office- if I was going to get everyone sick and not be productive- i would take a sick day. No sense in getting everyone else sick.

If I have a temp., I stay at home. I dont want to give my illness to others.
I had a boss once who would always come to work temp or not, he made some of his employees sick, including me sometimes.
He's dead now, problem solved!

I don't wait near that long before I dont go..
I don't like it when people around me at work are sick, so if I am not feeling well, I do not go.

That is rare at least, I seem to be a fairly healthy adult.

Since i'm self employed, i just don't get sick. knock on wood.

When i had a job with paid sick leave i had markedly worse health and often was out for days!

Then, there are the folks who believe that "Sick days are too valuable to waste on illness"
