I happened to be passing through Hollister last month and drove by a friend's house. He just happened to be outside changing the oil in his '47 Chevy custom so I stopped. He was getting ready for the Goodguys meet that weekend in Pleasanton.

We used to work for the same company back in the 80's - 90's and we got into a lot of catching up.

I asked about the '47 and he related a story to me of how the first 327 bit the dust.

He was at a show and getting ready to leave. He starts it up and hears a very faint knock. He shuts it off and checks the oil - full. Starts it again and the knock is still there. So he guns it once and the knock gets LOUD. He shuts it off again and starts scratching his head.

His buddy notices coolant dripping out of the left header flange.

He then notices the nut sitting on the air cleaner lid. No stud.

He sits down and cracks open another beer.

Just another day in the life (and death) of a small block Chevy...
Wouldnt Ed Cole be proud...(father of the Corvair and Vega engine as well).

Ugh! Talk about a bad day.

As a youngster, I often shadowed an older who worked on vehicles often. He asked me to remove the air cleaner housing from his 1977 Ford p/u. Not sure what to do with the wingnut, I threaded it back on the stud, with the aircleaner housing removed. Later he caught this and yelled at me as he threaded the wing nut off. KerPLINK! Down the carb it went. He was able to fish it out with needle-nose pliers, but not w/out a bunch of grumbling. LOL!
