I know the feeling. It sure feels like the "right people" are waiting longer and longer to have kids. By the time they've finished college and grad school, established a career, got married, have decent health insurance, and enough assets to properly raise a child, they're already in their 30's and old enough that any pregnancy would be "high risk".

But if a couple isn't married, doesn't have a career, and have no assets, the taxpayer will fund them. If you want to know how bad it is, just look at this map:

http://www.statehealthfacts.org/comparemaptable.jsp?ind=223&cat=4

To me, it's just mind boggling how many incentives there are for the poor to have kids and how many disincentives there are for the middle class.

I think this whole environmental movement is nothing more than a well planned marketing game.

It just gives people the warm and fuzzy feeling that by buying stuff that is marked as "green" they are reducing pollution or energy consumption, when in fact, in some cases, the opposite happens.

When I was shopping around for a central AC, I was toying with the idea of getting something like 16 SEER (minimum requirement in Ontario is 13), after all the idea of low electric bills was alluring. But after some extensive research on Hvac Talk forum, I came to a conclusion that I will not be saving anything even in a best case scenario because of the extra cost of equipment.

Also, there are tons of people on that forum with complaints that after they switched from their old system (usually 10 SEER) to the new high efficiency systems, their electric bills WENT UP. The consensus was that this resulted from a poor installation.
So, when I summed up the added cost of the high efficiency system and a possibility of a bad install, I just couldn’t see how it would make sense. I went with 13 SEER and I am happy.

Like someone in this thread already said, using common sense is the most responsible way.

I think the environmental movement is now exploited by marketers but it didn't start with them. And just like with anything else, you have to sort through all the marketing [censored] to get the product you want.

The Idiocracy is alive and well these days. Think of all the dirty diapers filling landfills from kids that won't ever have a chance to make anything of themselves. That's an environmental nightmare.

So what do you propose we do with those kids or their diapers for that matter?

Please post the qualifications of the people that can participate in your eugenics program.

The stuff that you are complaining about is totally minor and nearly meaningless. The idea that this minor behavior is somehow going to change the world is totally nuts. I would firmly plant you well into the tree-huger category.

Well said.

A big "thanks" to those who sent me positive replies.

Sorry if I offended anyone. I apologize. Except for the people who don't know common sense and very basic responsibility.

meaningless? Such simple things? Remember back in 2008, a certain famous person made fun of another person because he wanted all Americans to check their tire PSI because it will lessen our dependence on oil even if it is a known fact? Because we can't do something simple like check out tire pressures, we waste millions of gallons of oil. Simple simple simple things.

That map is even worse than I thought it was. The governments of this country are indeed subsidizing baby making by those least able to support them.

Correction, it is almost completely gone right now. Give it another decade and there will be none left. Next stop for the USA another third world nation that looks a lot like Brazil.

Well those already here with us, should be given equal access to every opportunity afforded any other citizen.

But going forward...a great first step would be a major overhaul of one of the entitlement programs that feed and nurture this very problem. Section 8 Housing serves to tear the family apart. Coupled with the SSI rules it also encourages the birth of countless otherwise unwanted children that represent nothing more than a $$ number to some of the dead beat parents around here.

If you really want to turn your stomache, do some research into the lives of the average Native American Indian that lives on a federally created reservation. I'm sure you know, they still exist, but many Americans are oblivious to the fact that they do.

The undeniable failure of the federal programs repeatedly thrown as scraps in these situations, and the resulting crime/alcoholism/child abuse is testament to their absolute inability to create even a micro society, let alone a whole nation. They have in effect stalled the progress of these people, extinguished any desire to succeed many of them ever had.

Our countries continued, futile effort to create equality of outcomes where only equality of opportunity can exist will be the end of us.

Don't let others try and sway you from your outlook or perception of your roomate.

You are right! Today consideration for others and common sense are lost arts!

I am sure this room mate KNOWS darn well that what he does annoys you and is inconsiderate, BUT HE DOESN'T GIVE A ----!

The worst part is that it would take him no effort at all to make the little changes that would keep the two of you in a decent arrangement otherwise.

I think of the movie "Network" and what Howard Beale (Peter Finch) speaks of about how "the tube" has become our reality.

I highly recommend this movie, it is still very timely right now even though it is 35 years old!!!!

I highly suggest watching Idiocracy if you found that entertaining

Well, I'll agree with you on that point. Well educated individuals with stable incomes (or at least as stable as possible in this economy) are having less and less children and its been that way for at least the last decade if not longer.

Meanwhile the high school dropouts and recent immigrants with limited skillsets, pretty much nonexistent education, and the lack of means to barely support themselves much less several children are popping out kids like rabbits.

I went to my high school reunion and majority of the losers and GED people had 3+ more kids. Majority of them had kids in gangs. The majority with good careers had 2 or less kids.

My parents, both teachers, had four kids. I have three. My sister has recently had her first (PhD in Mathematics) and I'm sure will have at least two.

That being said, I know of numerous people dependent upon "social assistance" with 4+ kids.... The more kids they have, the more money they get! It's a freakin' reproduction incentive! Not something we should be encouraging for people who are obviously failures at existence in many cases. They live like parasites, sucking the money out of a society who could otherwise be using those tax dollars to build roads, transit, and maintain the systems that those paying the taxes use.

@Overkill:

Yeah it but it makes for a very compliant subservient slave race.

I would tell you to look at a country like Mexico, Brazil or even China...these serfs have no ability to have a sense of outrage or be indignant when it comes to the way their overlords conduct "business" as usual. This is just what the elite want. total subservience to their whims. They are breeding it into the general population. Why do you think they let hordes of illegal alien mestizos from Mexico into the US? They will make good economic slaves.

I have a simple but extremely unpopular and politically suicidal solution. If you have a child and need public assistance to support that child then as part of the stipulations on you receiving continued taxpayer support you must go on birth control and it will have to be of the no-pill variety. Depo shots or an IUD (or Norplant if that's still around).

Of course the completely nonsensical counterarguments are that its "genocide" or "eugenics" which is complete and utter b.s. or that the gov't cannot force someone to do this. However, it wouldn't be forced. It would be voluntary. You want your benefits you volunteer to take the shot/IUD.

The only argument that holds water is that unfairly puts the onus on women. True, but until they develop a male hormonal birth control its the only solution we have.

Quote:
[addressing Congress] ... And there was a time in this country, a long time ago, when reading wasn't just for [homosexuals] and neither was writing. People wrote books and movies, movies that had stories so you cared whose [censored] it was and why it was [censored], and I believe that time can come again!

Doctor: [laughs] Right, kick [censored]. Well, don't want to sound like a **** or nothin', but, ah... it says on your chart that you're [f'd] up. Ah, you talk like a [homo$exual], and your [s is] all retarded. What I'd do, is just like... like... you know, like, you know what I mean, like...

Narrator: [Time Masheen starts] We're gonna take you back, to the year 1939 when Charlie Chaplin and his nazi regime enslaved Europe and tried to take over the world...
Narrator: ...But then an even greater force emerged, the U.N.
[pronounced "un"]
Narrator: and the U.N. un-nazied the world - forever.

Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.

I think you need to find a new place to live. Tony and I were very different in our view of things but we met in the middle. Everyone does something that annoys the other. In 5 years will your room mates action make a real difference in your life? You probably do a lot of things that annoy him also.
