I have a contractor whom I got through Home Advisor to do some work on my bathroom. The total job requires about 2.25 days and the price is $940. Does one normally tip a contractor in these cases and if so what is a reasonable tip? Ed

To me it depends on the quality of work, and the value of what I'm getting.
I had some tree guys come and climb and take a tree down, a couple of other trees and only charged me $400. I gave them $600. It was worth that to me.
They worked hard, probably underpriced the job. Next time I need them, they will remember me, I should not be too low on the list.

Tip? Not usually that’s for restaurants lol. Though I have gotten many tips as a mechanic of people who needed just small things like air in their tires and stuff. I once got $35 from a lady for airing up all 4 of her tires and pulling a razor blade out it hadn’t pierced the tire yet but she was happy I got it out.

Always tip if you see value and hard work in the trade!
You generally don't tip a contractor. If someone has done a particularly good job and the price was low you might add something, but (for me anyway) that would be uncommon.
You don't tip your doctor or dentist either (I hope).
940 divided by 18 hours, if it actually takes that long, is $52.22 an hour minus the amount Home Advisor takes. Yep, better tip him/her, not.
I tipped my Ford tech friends back in FL. They did little jobs here and there for me.
Home Advisor charges 300 annually plus $15-60 per job. About $48.72 an hour after the cut. Yep, better tip the poor bastard.

I offer water, coffee, snacks only.
I do when the work is good and the prices fair and/or when someone pulls me out of a jam. I also tend to use the same folks long term, treat them with respect and don't unreasonably beat them up on any pricing.
My reasoning is threefold;
-I respect the craft
-I respect a job well done at a fair price
-in pure self interest, I want to be at the top of the list if I have a critical issue

For people who INFREQUENTLY have work done, do you really think paying extra puts you at the top of any sort of list?

Most contractors I deal with are doing the jobs themselves and they're providing me with an estimate before hand. If someone besides the owner of the business does the work I might give them a little tip if the work is done properly and they do a good clean up afterwards, Years ago I was leaving home one afternoon and there was a car in my driveway with 2 older ladies in it. I asked them if they were having trouble and they said they'd just had their brakes worked on and they weren't working right. I told them to pull up closer to the house and I'd try bleeding them to see if that was the problem. Apparently whoever did the brake work didn't bother to bleed them when finished. I was just trying to be helpful to someone in need but they insisted I take $40 for helping them.
Live in a very rural area carpenter that installed siding and windows 2 man company gave him $100 tip would never answer any more calls for more work.

Absolutely not. They build in the “tip” to their quotes. If it’s a small time guy doing tree work or digging holes I’ll give him a tip or buy him some beer or something.
