Like REAL, dyno verified, has a timeslip to prove it 500HP or like "my mullet says my Camaro makes 500HP" and it has stock heads and some [censored] camshaft that "sounds 500HP".

I've met lots of guys with the latter

Picking parts from the Summit Catalog and adding the "increased HP" up to come up with your final number is apparently a fun game for some

look im not saying an awesome oil would not be better, but in reality how long do hotrods last? an off the shelf oil works great. or you can order a case of vr1 for cheap.

there are around 100 dirttrackers here running rottella with WAY MORE MOTOR. and i know 20 guys who just run pcmo with hydralic rollers.

and in the real world a 450 horse lt1 is a very mild motor. i would guess he has a cam with under 230@50 duration and mild portwork with a set of headers.

what kind of oil does chevy rec for their 400+ hp engines? i think all corvets have a mobil logo on the cap dont they?

oh and as for the not long comment, my 440 hp sbc with a flattappet ran for 2 years on Pennzoil Conventional 10w30 and 1500 mile ocis.
it was not oil but 87 oct (my friend put in) that took out the pistons. my solid roller 500hp 327 is still running today with a new owner and all its ever had was syntec. 7500 rpms every day.
my brothers 358 700 hp has been running 10 years with vr1. turning 8500 with a 250 shot.

i could list all day. but lets not split hairs, oil is probably not the problem here. it might be bad machine work

awesome!!
even with [censored] heads it easy to get 500 with 14-1 and a nice solid. im not a dirt tracker but it works good for them.

my cam run a best of 7.8 1/8 with full trim and 373s
327 s10 hit 6s before selling
358 sbc fox has a best of 6.3 with a 250 shot. can take more but needs more suspnsion

An engine will run on ANY oil. Question is whether magnetic particles in his filter is normal, or caused by a lubrication issue, mechanical failure, or something else.

Get a used oil analysis and trying to rule out lubrication issue is pretty easy.

It cracks me up when someone builds or modifies an engine way beyond spec and use a cheapo mineral oil.

My recommendation is to minimally use a GM4718m or a dexos1 oil.

If you have an oil temp gauge, what are your temps when you're hammering it and during normal driving?

If temps are a little warmer than normal, I would use any full synthetic 40 weight oil.

Get a Filtermag to collect more particles.

DARG! You did the blasphemous SBC into a Fox swap! God I hate that!

7.8 is what, low 12's?
6.3 is moving! high 9's, low 10's?

Buddy of mine has a Capri, 306, H/C/I, S-Trim, makes 534 to the tires and went 10.3 running out of gear.

Same guy also had a 406 in an S-10 that went 10.2 on motor. That puppy moved!

The norm around here is a set of camel-bump heads, some RV cam and they swear they are making 450HP, LOL! Even when it runs 14's.

god i hate hillbillies!! that stuff makes me want to vomit. most of the time they got 882s and think they got double humps.

my other brother got a 306 with ported e7s and an old small single plain with a trickflow stage 3 cam to go 7.70. it was 40 deg but i dont care ill take it!! stock suspension with southside lowers. if i were to do another car it would be symilar. i would love to see a 5.0 with e7s hit 6s!! even with spray thats awesome.

sorry i kinda jacked the thread ill stop lol

the only time I have found metallic bits in an oil filter was after hitting some high rpms while in park.

...that's the last time I get plowed and decide that revving a cold engine is fun.

Some more information on my problem.

Many years ago the GM pushrod guide plates showed sever wear and clearly dropped particles into the motor. The root problem was that the guide plates were not hardened like they were supposed to be.

I bought another set of guide plates that were again, unhardened so I hardened them myself using a tool hardening process. The guide plates were significantly more hard than they were before.

The guide plates now do show very subtle amounts of wear in the slots so I have decided to replace the guide plates with new different brand hardened guide plates. With the recent oil change and once the new guide plates are on, it will be easy to tell at the next oil change if it was indeed the guide plates that were dropping particles into my motor. Also the shiny finish of the particles seem to match the worn areas of the guide plates. Really hope that is all of the problem.

wow i didnt know they made guide plates that were not hardened.
is it an engine specific common problem? you could always bite the bullet and go with jessel shaftmounts

The guide plates in question are not OEM equipment. They are aftermarket and most use them when installing non self aligning roller rockers.

I don't think he was implying they were OEM. Rather that he was surprised that somebody produced non-hardened guide-plates.

BTW, the Jessel shaft-mount stuff is sick! But pricey. I'm running Crane "Cobra" (aluminum 1.7 ratio) rockers on my 302's. They are peds, so no guide-plates.
