At the moment I have 500mi left before my goal of a 7.5k OCI on a good fill of 5w20 Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 in my del sol. This oil I know can go past an easy 7.5k. That oil in my car has seen ONLY and I mean ONLY highway miles and it has been exactly a year and a half since I did the change. Im thinking of stretching it out farther since I know Id be dumping good oil (I hope its good). The next change will be the same Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 for probably another 7.5k unless someone can change my mind here. No leaks, no burns, no top off what so ever.

Go for 10K.....with your driving habits....and using Pennzoil's top-tier oil (Ultra)....10K should be easy. IMO....it would be a waste of good oil to dump it at 7500.

Question: What filter are you using?

BTW....I just changed my oil from Pennzoil Platinum 5w20(SM)....to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20(SN)...and drove down to Valencia, CA from Bend, OR today (780 mostly freeway miles)....on I-5 averaging 70 to 75 mph.

My impression was that my vehicle ran slightly cooler, and was getting better mpg (but haven't figured that out yet). Also changed the spark plugs prior to leaving. Might be just plecebo effect....but we'll see.

OEM's like BMW and MB give free oil changes at one year to customers during the maintenance period even if the OLM hasn't completed a cycle. Oil degrades with time as well. Time to get it out of there.

I'd go the 500 miles...or change it, depending on how you feel.

13 months and 8,500km on my Nissan this OCI, and it's clean as in the valve cover, after 15 months last change

Don't wait until 10k miles which will be two full years without an OC. No way man, since you're in this forum you know how to find quality oil and filters for around 25$ ( mobil 1 Filter and full synth. Oil at Oreilly AP last fall for example).
So 25$ every year and a half and the enjoyment of getting under there and DIY is a nobrainer imo.
Talk to some auto engenieer types, i don't think any of them would say leaving it in there that long is ok.
Your use of a high quality filter is very wise.
Thx for listening.

I make a lot of short trips - don't drive a lot of long trips and have the oil changed every 6 months because of the warranty.

Often less than 3,000 miles between changes.

IMO you're already 6 months overdue for a change.

The car gets driven 2-3 days a week.

I'd change it.
After 7.5K and a year and a half, I'd say you've gotten your money out of it.
Did Honda back-spec a 5W-20 for any '95 Civic engine?
Don't think so.
I'd be really curious to see a used oil analysis of your run, both to see how the oil held up over a long time interval in the engine, as well as how wear numbers look on a 5W-20.

Agreed. We all know that the pureone is a great filter.

+1....I'll second that. I've been using PureOne's for over four years now....and my engine hasn't seized or stopped.

IMO....PureOne's might be the best mid-tier filter available....and with rebates....can be had for $3 or $4....just a great buy.

As a general rule I use:

(TBN x 10 - months in service) x adjusted oil capacity x mpg to get an approximate starting point for an oil change interval.

Im assuming a starting TBN of 13.0 and a 4.0 Qt Oil Capacity with no oil use:

(13.0 x 10 - 24) x 4.0 x 30 mpg = 12,720 miles maximum at 24 months.

If you added 2 qt during your run the formula for adjusted capacity is:

(Capacity / Total Oil Used) x add oil + Capacity

So (4.0 / 6.0) x 2.0 + 4.0 = 5.33

(13.0 x 10 - 24) x 5.33 x 30 mpg

Maximum 16,949 miles at 24 months.

Its not exact but it gives some idea as to an adjustment for time factor, add oil and average loading (mpg) of the engine.

My BIL bought a 5 year old Porsche Boxster in 2004. It still had the factory fill of European Mobil 1 5W-40 and oil filter after 5 years. My BIL changed the oil and filter and sent the oil to Terry Dyson for an used oil analysis. It came back with the oil in good shape with life left in it.

This was not a daily driver and driven always till the oil was always up to temperature. It depends on the quality of the oil and the driving conditions as how long the OCI should be. Time does not always determine the OCI. I posted the used oil analysis on this site in 2004 maybe it's still in the used oil analysis section.
