My size is 225/40/r18 speed rating v I had bfg comps they were awfully hard and road like crap. What would be a good set for the car that ride decent and smooth but handle decent? I can get generals for $98 a tire any opinions on those? Thanks everyone and it's for the dart. This car is sensitive to road force so a good quality brand is a must.

Barum 3HM if you can get it. It's a Czech company own by Continental and they essentially use older but still amazingly excellent designs like the Contisport Contact 2 but sell them for $50 through Disc. Tires.

You purchased new tires a year ago. Surprised you need ones again so soon.

I have that same size on my VW GTI. Realistically, the short sidewalls make this tire size ride hard and is prone to transmit the tiniest tire imbalance, harmonic, out of round issue to the driver.
My wife has General G-MAX AS-05 tires on her Audi, bought at Discount Tire. They are fantastic tires but have a bit more tire noise at high driving speeds than the original tires.

This may sound odd, but I've never had an out of round or balance issue with any tire made in Europe. I think Europeans drive fast and wont put up with that crap unlike North Americans.
The Generals on my wife's car are made in Portugal.

Yeah I agree. There isn't much sidewall there to work with for a more comfortable & quiet ride. There may be a tire in that size that is the "best riding" while still handling decent. But that doesn't mean it's going to be a good riding tire! It's that 40 series 18" tire size that is the problem.

^ Very important question.

If you need a tire that works in winter, go with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06. Otherwise, go for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (or the 4S if you'd trade a bit of comfort for more performance).

Winter performance doesn't matter to much . Decent rain performance does though

He doesn't like those either:

They new ones were even worse the first set was annoying but you could live with it it. But the second set were horrific! They road forced them and they were still bad. Went to another shop same chain different location they re checked them and said they were good to. So I finally said look I'm done give me another brand of tires. So they gave me a set of uniroyals and swore it couldn't be the tires. Well I said whatever I don't care at this point put something else on and let's see. So they did. And now the car drives as smooth as ever. I had a bad experience with cooper a few years back they cs4 it wouldn't seat on the rim correctly and cause a vibration. 5 sets all did this . I thought I'd give them another shot and I paid for it. I guess them being made in China makes sense. The quality is probably suffering. I will not ever buy another set of coopers no matter how pleasant the deal looks. I am just blessed that I was able to get it resolved before Friday I leave st 5am for Colorado and did not want to shake all the way their!

Increasing the series with the same width would definitely add cushion, but it'd also increase the overall diameter of the tire. It might rub a bit at times, your speedometer and odometer would be off, and your car would ride slightly higher.

I like mine very much.

But they are not cheap...

how many sets of tires have you put on that thing.. if you are that picky just pay and get something good.

I feel like bf Goodrich is a good brand. I think part of the problem has been people not balancing correctly and the low side wall. That being said these are already to 4/32
