It's been a while since I have posted pictures of my model cars. The first one is a 1966 Matchbox #18 "Field Car." That was Matchbox's method of not having to pay licensing rights to make a Bronco or Scout. They made a slightly generic "Field Car." This model is around 1/64 scale. The yellow car is the Matchbox original, the red version is the modded one I built a very long time ago. The toy came with a pressure-activated steering and the feature is intact. It has custom cast metal wheels and the tires are Buna N O-rings. The axles are stainless steel capillary tubing and the hubs are tiny brass nails. I had to use a tiny reamer on the tubing to accomplish a friction fit for the brass bail. Custom paint job. The window frame with friction-fit window is also custom-built. I don't have the required patience for making that sort of thing anymore.

The second model is a Hothweels VW 181 convertible in ca 1/59 scale. It has the same wheel and tire setup as the Field Car, a custom paint job, and drilled headlights filled with UV cure resin.

For the disassembly of the unmolested models I had to drill out the bottom plate rivets and I drilled and tapped the rivet posts for brass screws ranging from 0-90 to 0-72 to M2 to 2-56 studs and nuts, depending on the model.

I'm pretty pleased with how well these models have held up over the years. Working on models made after the 80s can be tricky because many models suffer from poor zinc-casting alloys that after years will crack and crumble. This generally does not happen with older diecast models. They were made with far superior alloys - superior at least in terms of durability and longevity.
