Yes sadly so true...all of my many uncles from both sides served most of the pre Vietnam wars...Farm boys came back smokers and alcoholics. Like many others they saw atrocities so many didn't have to.
But that gal was a hero and had a Hollywood flair about her in her uniform.. she did live to be 79 I believe...

Back then, the dangers of smoking wasn't as well known or believed to be "bad", and smoking was looked at as "glamorous". Remember those old cigarrette ads where doctors were touting the greatness of cigarette bands.

Yeah, I know that in the 40s, it was just a thing’. I grew up in the 60’s, and I was the only member of my family that didn’t smoke. The kids I ran with all turned out to be a jocks’ so I didn’t have any peer pressure. I recall this one hot chick that I dated for a short period of time. She was perfect from head to toe with neon white teeth. The first time we kissed, she tasted like an ashtray smells. I tried to be as diplomatic as possible, and I asked if she considered how smoking would change her complexion and her teeth. She dropped me like a hot rock! 🙄
