My Favorite Tug Boat, The Barbara Moran
It was a cool Saturday in mid-October 1954. I had recently turned 9 years old. Dad and I got up early and headed into the city for a long-planned day together. Apart from going to the Museum of Natural History, I knew nothing of any other plans. After exploring the museum we walked to the closest Horn and Hardart Automat for lunch after which we headed to the waterfront. Dad said he had a surprise for me.
When we got to the destination, we parked the truck and walked to a nearby tug boat. It was the Barbara Moran. The name is etched into my memory, in part because my sister's name is Barbara. After taking a few pictures Dad said "Let's go aboard," and I was stunned. We were greeted by the captain, and it seemed that he and Dad knew each other. I got a tour of the boat, personally conducted by the captain.
What a great day that was!
