Beautiful day in Cincinnati-ish yesterday so with absolutely no destination in mind I slapped on a gallon of sunscreen and went on a looooong top-down drive in the Spider and ended up at my old stomping ground, KILN in Wilmington, Oh at the old Airborne Express hub. In the last few years its become the Jurassic Park of dinosaur airliners. Probably the only place left on planet earth where you can still see two fully intact DC-8's and whats left of a few 727's parked right there in the flesh. Twenty years ago this was one the most hustling, bustling, noisiest places of nonstop commotion I had ever encountered. Yesterday, just crickets, an occasional locust, and not another human in sight.

he WB Holden Statesman was released in April 1980 and phased out in early 1985.

The WB series was planned to be an upgrade of the HZ Holden but a late decision by Holden Executives decided to shelve the sedans and wagons and build only the Statesman and commercial versions.

The WB Statesman was a near completely new design over the HZ Statesman sharing only the front quarter panels, windscreen, front side mirrors, front doors and bonnet.

Inside, the WB had a brand-new interior with a wider center console and standard bucket seats. The longer roofline resulted in extra headroom, and Holden engineers also moved the rear seat back further which gave additional rear legroom.

The base DeVille had black dash trim and soft cord cloth on the seats, while the Caprice featured walnut dash applique and velour trim (leather was a no-cost option).

DeVille models had standard air-conditioning, 14-inch wheels, thick carpets, rear air-conditioning vents and power mirrors. Options included cruise control and power windows or select the Caprice on which those items were standard fitment.

The Caprice also had larger 15-inch alloy wheels and a different grille. Optional on both models was a limited slip differential.

The WB Statesman Deville and Statesman Caprice were only available with the locally made Holden 5.0 Litre 308ci V8 and Turbo Hydramatic 350, although this was replaced in 1981 with the Australian made three speed TriMatic automatic.

Series I WB Statesman production: 5,450 DeVilles and 3,055 Caprices.

Series II WB Statesman production: 4,269 DeVilles and 1,153 Caprices.
