In the mid 60's through early 70's my family had a cabin on Moosehead Lake in Maine.
The cabin was only accessible by boat. It was on the only access road to Mt. Kineo.
We'd leave on a Friday night (Mom, Dad, Grandma and my 4 sisters and myself
the only boy) in our station wagon. We'd arrive at Rockport, Maine around midnight. (Drove from Mass.)
We'd board (8 and provisions) a 16 ft wooden rowboat/15 hp tiller and cross the lake on a 40 minute ride to a neighbors cabin
who had a dock. Our neighbor would put an oil lamp on his dock as an aid to help us find the dock at night. In the early 70's
Scott Paper co. began logging the pristine forests in the area and we were able to drive to the cabin in our wagon.
Lost my Mom in February and Dad mentioned he would see the old place one last time.
We made the rainy drive from Jersey in 10 hours. Arrived Saturday night in Kokadjo.
Today we drove for 5 hours to and from the old cabin
on old logging roads. Many a wrong turn and no maps or guided GPS routes we finally found the old place.
Pic of my Dad in front of the cabin. It had been 50 years since we last saw it.
Bucket list X2.
