Thoughts on the Purolater Premium Plus oil filter?

I just went back to these filters from the Mobil and Bosch Premium...have used them for many years with good results.I've cut open a number of them and they seem to be pretty good quality inside.The side of the box claims 96% multiple pass 20 micron...please say they are pretty good...I just bought a crap-load of them at a good price

..since I service five Jeeps for close customers and will use these filters on their vehicles.

About all that we really know in terms of performance of any of them is how they are advertised. It is clear that some are built with more care and apparently better components than others, but how well they do what they are supposed to do is the big question. There are plenty of anecdotes from dedicated users, but precious little from the manufacturers.

I think somebody posted that the premium plus they cut open had cardboard endcaps like the frams. Maybe it was just the particular filter for their application that had them.

I used to use these filters until I found out the new ones were made with cardboard in them. I thought their filtration efficiency was pretty good, however their flow ratings aren't super spectacular (3-5 GPM for most of their filters)

I don't use Purolator anymore because the thin-ness of the canister annoyed me. They are only about .009" thick. I hasten though to add that they appear well built in all other respects. I have also never heard of any of them failing. I have heard the report about the card end caps before-but I don't think that is the usual construction.

These are link to pics of the Mobil filters (made by Purolator and seem to be identical to the Premium Plus line ... p/n P14459) I picked up from eBay about 6 weeks ago. $20 shipped for 12. Good enough to use on my daily driver Civic Si with Citgo SuperGard (recently picked up a case for CHEAP!) and Schaeffer 10w30. Yeah, metal endcaps too!!

The Premium Plus filters I purchased are for the Ford V8 application..#L30001...I've seen the Honda filters with the cardboard endcaps but every one of the L30001's I've cut open has had metal as endcaps.I'll keep cutting them open to check anyways...can't stop myself

...these filters work great on the 4.0L in terms of fast oil pressure build.Has anyone really witnessed a can burst or seen a filter that this happened to?If I find one wih cardboard endcaps I'll bring it to the boards attention.Thanks for the replies.

You say you have seen the Purolator filters for the Hondas with cardboard end caps, was this the L14459?

As long as you can see the by-pass valve by flipping it over off the shelf..like in the above link...it will have metal end caps.Just purchased a couple for a customers Honda I service.If you can't see the metal U channel ,sheet metal valve mount..then it's a Fram clone.It's easy to see.

i've been cutting open the L40017 which is the longer version of the L30001 (i think) for the Ford V8's that use he Fram PH8A. BTW L40017 cross refs to Luberfiner PH299. These are on fleet vehicles that idle and or get driven drive at LEAST 7-10 hours a day. These seem to hold up pretty well. No cardboard endcaps that I've seen and I've cut open at least 75 of these.

I just switched to the Plus (L14460) from the Pure One (PL14460) because of more valvetrain noise upon startup than I liked. I looked at the ST3593 but decided against it due to the fact it has an anti-drainback valve which I don't need because of the filter orientation on my Subaru engine. The Purolator Plus is now my filter of choice.........Doug

I had that same problem!!! After reading a bunch of stuff, I decided to go with the Purolator PureOne filter. After installing it though, I had a bunch of valvetrain noise on startup with the noise continuing until the engine warmed up. Not good! Switched over to the "regular" Purolator Premium Plus filter and all the noise went away!
