Thoughts on Lubro-Moly 5w40 High Tech Synthoil...?

Hey Guys,

Just picked up 7 liters of the 5w40 at my local Napa for $7.99 a bottle. Heard many good things about this brand and now that we can get it locally, that is a big plus! It is VW 502.00/505.00 APPROVED. I have been an Elf user for years but wanted to try this out. It is going in a 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg with the 2.0T that has 9800 miles on the clock.

Any thoughts on it? Can anyone find the MSDS specs? Any used oil analysis done? Discuss...

I have been using this oil for a while in my '96 Audi with a 2.8 liter V6 engine. I am very happy with how the engine runs and sounds. Oil consumption is lower than expected. I doubt I will have a used oil analysis performed. My planned OCI is around 8k to 10k miles.

Is it just me or do those 1 L bottles look huge? Saw on the shelf the other day and they look gigantic.

These bottles are fairly thin, so they do look larger compared to containers with more compact shapes. My car's intake manifold and V6 look tiny in that picture. I also used a wide angle lens and shot from a close distance to exaggerate the size of the bottles and of the filter. Look at the telltale foreshortening in the picture!

Nice of you to bring Mobil into this Lubro Moly discussion...this is not going to be a "which oil is better" debate.

I was just looking over their website and they have changed it around a bit...they now have the Full Synthetic 5w40 labeled as "Premium" instead of "High Tech," probably the same oil I am betting. Do we think this is a blend of Group III and IV base stocks since it can be used for a long drain interval or strictly IV? The engine is running very smooth like I assumed it would be...

I believe that LM Synthoil High Tech 5 W-40 is a new name for LM Vollsynthese 5W-40. Both oils are full synthetic (confirmed on German LM Web site).

LM 5W-40 Vollsynthese and its successor, Synthoil High Tech 5 W-40, are at least Group IV oils. HC (Group III) oils would not be considered fully synthetic by LM. See the above product list for truth in product labeling.

Hi,
Porsche has LiquiMoly's Leichlauf HC7 on their general Approvals List until May 9 2009

For the V6 Cayenne (VW) they have seven Approved lubricants Listed on the NA Approved lubricants including that one above. Five are 5W-40, one each of 0w30 and 5w30

I am reasonably sure that they were/are a low level FF supplier to Daimler AG

Doug, if I hadn't been so lazy I would have copied and pasted all the approvals for each LM oil, but one can easily look them up on the LM Web site.

I noticed one LM oil, while not approved, was recommended by LM for engines requiring VW 505.01.

The English language LM site seems pretty much identical to the German homepage.

mori - Thanks. I'm sure that even though they are a relatively "new" player, they do know what it's all about.

As we know some websites say "Meets" or "Exceeds" and etc but don't appear on the actual engine manufacturers Approvals List

Thanks for the good info, apreciate it! It now looks like High Tech Synthoil has been succeeded by Premium Synthoil from their website.

my imposing question is :
LM SynthOil 5w-40, is it still optimum for the double vanos in my BMW's M54 3 liter engine?

I put Mobil 1 0w-40 in our 530i (same engine) and it had oil leaks at the oil sending unit. ($$$ to replace seal) Therefore.... I am NOT a fan of Mobil 1 0w40.

I am really hoping by using the LM that my oil consumption will go down. The 2.0T FSI direct injection motor is notorious for burning "large quantities" of oil between OCI's; whats odd is that it isnt every motor only most of them. If memory serves correct VWoA states that burning 1 qt every 1200 miles is within spec...thats total SB! I have yet to hear of someone using LM and complaining about excessive oil consumption...*fingers crossed*

The BMW N54 3 liter twin turbo (direct injection) also wrecks havoc on Mobil 1 0w40, from what I have read.

It is weird how the benefits of direct injection are praised and touted (more power, better efficiency/mileage), but the strain on the motor oil is under the radar.

High Tech is pretty much the same oil as volsitheses(whatever)...
I am using it in my both cars and I am very pleased. No UAO but they look quieter as all LM users noticed...

If you want 505.01 oil try to find TopTech but I am not sure do you have it over there. It's Gr3+ as they say on their sheet...

For HighTech they say it is 100% synth, and I stumbled on some BMW forum(German) that it is Gr4 fortified with Gr5... The man who stated that had contact with their chief engineer. I even checked name of this man on LM site(search field) to see it he's telling the truth and he really works there...

They confirmed in E-mail that they use gr5 for fortification but didn't want to tell me in witch oils...

If the M54 engine requires 5W-40 viscosity, I don't see any problem. You could email LM and ask them specifically for advice regarding your application.
