Thoughts of Lenovo vs IBM....any changes?

when my wife got into pharmacy school, she was given a "free"

IBM ThinkPad R51 latop (w/Intel Centrino) for school. It really is very sturdy, fast and we both like it (we especially like how the DVD player on it puts a great s-video & analog stereo audio output to our flat screen tube TV and home stero...amazing picture and sound quality!!!)

and some people in her class have dropped the thing on the ground and they work like a charm still...

I'll also be starting pharmacy school in the Fall and I bet I'm going to "get" a Lenovo ThinkPad of similar range/caliber...
so i was wondering if the Lenovos are inferior in anyway to the IBMs...or has the name just changed, w/out decrease in quality?

For the past two or three years Lenovo has been producing "IBM Thinkpads" anyway. IBM has just decided to give up on the PC and notebook business. Quality/warranty service appears to be the same.

it seems (to me) that quality and service have dropped since they have officially been displaying the Lenovo name.

I got a T42 high end laptop from IBM, and it was great. One of my coworkers bought a mini notebook from them (it was one of the first instances where they answered the line as lenovo), and it didnt work out of the box, customer service has been the pits, and he has been generally unhappy all around. I know because I did some of the calling for him, as I place a lot of the orders and have a number of contacts there. He is the one who wants a new laptop, thus my sony vs. toshiba thread.

He wont be buying any new IBM/lenovo products again... Im still unsure what ill get next... but Im real happy with my t42.

Hmm...in my case I don't have a choice

I guess I'll just wait and see how it is...
Hopefully they'll go with a different firm, but I doubt it, since all the notebooks I've seen at Campbell univ. so far are IBMs.

I was at at a Chinese factory vying for Lenovo business prior to the IBM sell out. It wasn't pretty.

Not sure why, but I bought stock in LNVGY also. It's been down ever since.
