I'm so turned off of modern movies, I've gotten to the point where I'll barely watch anything that's in color, and even then it has to be at least 20 years old to be a proven classic.
But I'll get around to seeing this on the big screen; Saturday bargain matinee when the crowds have subsided.

I really enjoyed it. While I'm not a "Star Wars" groupie, I did enjoy the original movie. Not as much with the subsequent movies.
This one really followed the format of the original quite nicely. Without absurd characters and silliness. But with plenty of good "Sci-Fi" stuff to keep me interested.
I saw "The Force Awakens" in an expensive, high end, "luxury" theater. To my surprise, the picture was way too dim and the sound was not loud enough. I swear the surround sound was turned off. I will have to see it again in a different theater.
Even so, it was fun!

Good to hear. We only saw the first one at the theater and were blown away by the graphics. Neither her or I are Sci-Fi types so we didn't expect much, what a surprise that was.

My MIL wanted to take the grandkids, so I got a free ticket to see it in a big theater. Free is a good price.
But after seeing it... I hate to admit it... but I will stand in line to see the next one. I go to the movies like every 5 years, haven't wanted to in even longer--but I can't wait for the next one.

Just do what my wife and I did yesterday, go during one of the morning shows, where the price is less than during the evening. We saw the 11:30 showing yesterday, and it was $5.45 per ticket.
Movie was well worth $5.45 per ticket, and then some.

I saw it last weekend with my wife and kids. we had to drag my wife. I am a Star Wars junkie since I watched the first one as a kid back in the late 70s. I thought the new one was the worst. I didn't like it at all. My wife liked and my daughter did. My son who watched all the originals didn't like the new one either, I think if your new to Star Wars or just kinda into it. You will like their new spin. If your a hardcore junkie that grew up with the whole Jedi/Sith thing. Your going to feel slighted. The bad guy, he isn't all that bad. He is not even close to Darth Vader bad. Why wear a mask if you are going to take it off every 15 minutes. It was a remake of the original made to please new generations, I suppose
I dunno. I see your point, plenty to dislike about the character development. But, I always thought they could make millions off of making movies showing how Vader cut his teeth, instead of him just being Mr Bad (in the original trilogy) or becoming Mr Bad (the prequels). Here, whats-his-face could develop into Mr Bad Guy in a way that the original story never really developed.
I'll be curious what I think when I rewatch the movie in 5 or so years. I could probably sit down and watch the original trilogy any day of the week, at any point in time, and be happy. The prequels, I'd probably change the channel. But will I change on Episode 7, or will the newfound snark / one liners not age well? Dunno.

The original Star Wars did make millions off of showing how Vader cut his teeth. The original Star Wars started from the middle with Luke Skywalker, the same way they are now. Then they went from the middle to the end, then from the beginning to the middle where they were at from the start. The episodes are all out of order. Its genius how he linked them all together in the end. They totally blew all the ideas from the originals. The storm troopers are all clones, biologically produced, in the new ones they are trained child warriors or sort.

Clone troopers are all clones of Jango Fett. With the fall of the Republic and the rise of Palpatine to power, he did not trust the clones from 1 genetic stock. He added other groups of clones, and eventually opened up the ranks to any and all that met the qualifications.
AS to the movie, I enjoyed it. A few hokey moments, just as all the others. Some things I still don't understand (who is Rey and who are her parents. Does Finn have the force or just able to use a light saber for some reason?).
I also thought Kylo Ren's voice sounded stupid. Plus what kind of name is Kylo Ren?
They seemed to be trying to introduce too many characters in this one film IMO, with none of them really standing out with a real story.
All that said, I plan on going again alone next week. I have a movie pass from work, so I figure I can go next week during the middle of the day when everyone else is at work.

I meant Vader out destroying Rebel outposts, an Episode 3.1 if you will. Probably unnecessary fluff, better covered by fan fiction or video games, now that I think about it.
While I agree that Kylo is no bad guy, if they did make him just like Vader... we'd complain it was the story line rehashed. Kylo's character has like 5 minutes to develop what Lucas did with three movies for Vader. His development is weak, and Solo gets too many scenes--young swashbucklers don't age well, and neither has Ford. Great to see him, his role is much needed for the bridge between trilogies--but I'm starting to think he got too many scenes.

It was nice. B+. I had to sit down in front so saw the digital projection artifacts. Looks like being projected on playing card stock.
But the effects didn't look CGI-ish and a lot of it looked like grainy film. Yeah it's a current fad to look gritty and mean, and this film does that well. The wipes were a good homage to the originals. They didn't hit the viewer over the head lingering on some effects, either. A light saber fight in a snowy forest behaves like you'd expect, with slashes to trees smoldering with embers. But the camera panned away quickly. They also seem proud to fly a starship over water and have it kick up a wake, and that soccer ball robot leaves a ball-like trail in the desert sand.
A few writing stunts to pay homage to eps 4-6. Groan.
A few people tried to clap at the end. This was no "Titanic", sorry.
Ford's so-called cameo dragged on and on. General Leia wears the same pantsuits we'll be seeing Hillary in.
