I've never left the filler cap off a customers car. However, one day I went for a ride on my motorcycle after checking a few things on it....some miles later I noticed oil all over my boot. I carefully rode home, checking for my filler cap all the way....and there it was in the driveway.

Lots of perfect people here who've never made a mistake in their life....well, to hear it from their lips anyway.

I look at it this way. I don't let others change oil for me. I fear they'll screw up. I also know that I am a very messy oil changer. When I screw up, I know to look in the mirror if I need to place blame.

I did this fall of '13. Drove down to my brothers house in Tx, topped off the oil when I got there, and forgot to put the cap back on. A week later heading back home, i noticed a hot plastic smell, and on my gas stops, noticed an oily smell. I finally poped the hood to check on things, after dark on a Sunday outside of Indy, no cap. Get out the flashlight, look behind the engine, there's the cap, on a frame rail right under the exhaust manifold (burning plastic smell) as soon as I got home,(1100mi drive straight through.) I immediately changed the oil. Then in the morning went to the nearest parts store, and bought a new filler cap.

+1 I wish I could find a condo which had a bay for DIY vehicle work/carwashing in the underground parking lot. That would be a huge seller for me (even more so than the electric car charging plugs that was installed in every stall at my current place).

I generally don't like posts with subject lines such as "worth reading". I'll decide that. And "You'll never believe this"...or "No way this really happened". Etc Etc. You should have put "bad experience with quick lube shop" Nonetheless, here I am. I'll stop playing subject line police.

The fool in that shop didn't put the cap back on because it was a 710 cap. He didn't know where it went. And he probably torqued the pan drain bolt to 377 ft-lbs which is the max torque of his harbor freight chicago pneumatic 1/2" impact gun.
