I talked to a guy that has worked on cars for over 30 years. Boy was he getting hot about these INTERNET car owners. He ripped the internet boards to pieces. I guess he getting totally fed up with these people that Mickey Mouse their car because some who is talking totally out their butt convinces them it is the right way to do it. And of coarse these total Cheapskates will do anything to save a buck.
He had a car in last week that needed over $2800 in repairs because someone told the owner that they didn't need to maintain it as the owners manual said. Well had the owner spent $800 on this car over the last year they could have saved a lot of money. Lets start with timing belt that needed to be changed every 50K well it snapped at 82K. This was the reason car was brought in, it stopped running. The transmission was shifting crappy, reason no service had been done on it for at least 90K. All 3 assessory belts totally shot. Air cleaner was so packed he couldn't beleave the car ran. There was sludge in the valve train area. The owner couldn't remember when the oil was last changed other than some time last year. The antifreeze was brown and of unknown vintage. The brake pads were shot and the front rotors were so far past minimum thickness they were down right dangerous. When the customer balked at new rotors because of the cost, and need, he offered to call the State Police Inspector for his opinion. The barracks is only about 5 miles up the road. He did warn this guy that the State Police are tough when it come to this stuff. He could have gotten him out of the shop for about $1,700.

Cop stopped down about an hour later and with in 5 minutes asked for a razor blade. He scrapped the inspection sticker off the windshield and said the car was not road worthy. The Cop told him that this car will not be released until I inspect it first. Also told him that if he wanted to take the car somewhere else that was fine but it would have to be towed. And it still would have to be inspected by him before any new sticker would be put on.
