Third Tier Tires becoming increasingly popular

I'm a happy tier-three-tire user. Had many, never any fails or blowouts, and great performance at half or even third the cost of tier one tires. Here are some I tried:
- Westlake
- Sumitomo
- Waterfall
- Fullway
- Summit
- Douglas
- Crosswind
- Dextero
- Ironman
And likely a few others I can't remember now. But never a fail due to fault of tires. Did catch nails and screws, but those are equally attracted to all tires regardless of "tier".
Not sure about that, considering Sumitomo is a huge corporation with lot of good products.

I'd like to know the criteria with which tires are tier-rated.

I could see publishing a Best-Good-Passable list without differentiation / measure of merit being answered by slander suits.

Well...it kind of exits to a degree. Many tire stores on the web have ratings of Good-Better-Best. Of course who knows what the criteria is. Usually the top tier brands have the best rating.

IMHO, it pays to buy known good brands and avoid those not so known.
You pay more up front, but you then get long wearing durable tires that stay in balance and don't acquire any quirks through their lives.
In terms of cost per mile, I doubt there's much difference between a top tier tire and a bargain one.
I've tried some less expensive tires and have come back to the more expensive brands.
You do get what you pay for.

Well for my Sailun Tires I paid $98.00/ a piece. The cheapest Michelins were right around $200.00 I guess we will see.

When it comes to consumer demand, tire dealers continue to point to drivers who are deferring tire purchases until later and those who are buying are still opting for lower-priced options. We note healthy demand for low-cost, tier-three tire brands during the month. Dealers said demand for premium tier-one and tier-two brands was soft during the period.

For the third month in a row, tier-three tire brands were the most popular among consumers, according to dealers who participate in our survey.

So we know all this means-Chinese Tires, those made in South East Asia, etc.

We will see if we see tires blowing up on the highway ......

As I posted on another thread...I have a set of Sailun Tires-they are perfectly acceptable.

I put new tires on wife’s Sonata and they were made in Viet Nam. Second set purchased at Firestone under Sure Drive brand distributed by Bridgestone. Very nice tires. No complaints.

I’ve had few sets of tier 3 highway tyres and my experience has been that after a short period of time (12-18 months) their wet traction becomes relatively bad despite plenty of tread.

I have no way of accurately measuring, but the age cracked 10+ year old Toyo that I swapped in as a spare seems similar in the wet to 3 year old tier 3 tyres. The tier 3 are still better in the dry though and I trust them to hold together better on the highway too.

I will be looking for some new tyres in the next couple of weeks and will likely get tier 3 again.

Well played. I couldn't think of a clean enough joke to tell on BITOG.
Long Time Lurker liked my line of long lasting Linger Longer Ling Long tires.
You never know what people find funny these days.
Somebody laughed the other day when I told them that I was shopping for a new couch because mine was worn out after 30 years.
Maybe I should get a longer lasting leather one to lounge around on.

Most of the Sure Drive tires are manufactured by Kumho under an agreement with Bridgestone. They seem to have replaced the poorly made private label Primewell economy tires sold by Firestone stores. That would be a win in my book!

Juts make sure it's not bonded leather!

I see alot of those Ironmans and Milestars on older vehicles. I understand why, T1 tires are dang near a grand for a set of 4 mounted and balanced

Dextero has a decent reputation generally.
I got these. Ok so far. I had Koyo's, they were getting thin and one seperated on me.
