Things we see driving around - original content (pictures you snapped)

Supposed to is kinda like the speed limit signs.. Merely a "suggestion" in my eyes but to the even more braver that is taken as a "challenge accepted"

To a cop its about 20 tickets, lose your license, and watch your stuff get impounded.
I know someone who tried that a few years ago, and got caught.

for some reason see this a lot with RAM. Can it just be replaced or cost prohibitive

It can be repaired but the "right way" is to replace the whole bedside. You can cut out just the rusted area, and weld in a new arch, but 90% of the time, it will eventually rust out again around the area where it was welded.

Rust is the bane of my existence.

I see a lot of Rams of that generation with a rust hole in the middle of the front fender near the Hemi badge. Seems to be a common problem. Like this-

Also nearly every 2014-2018 Silverado/GMC I see needs rockers. I'd be upset if my truck that was less than 10 years old needed rockers.

Come on out to the other side of the Rockies where we don't salt the roads much.

You are darn right. Had no idea it is not just some isolated issues..... PLUS more than one company. WoW.

Every domestic truck looks like that. The Chevy trucks look probably the worse. I would put less money into the electronics and give the customer a better undercarriage product. People work hard for their money and i see this on newer trucks too. Shameful they cant or wont do something to keep this down like a rubberized coating or lanolin or something.

Is the bed more susceptible on a pickup as opposed to a SUV? Admittedly I’ve never looked under to see what a bed looks like…

Another question to ponder is: If my vehicle has that type (any really) swelling up and rusted out spots near the wheel wells , what else is already started the rotting out process too? What is going on all over other spots that can not be easily seen?

The lanolin/Fluid Film undercoating seem to help a lot, but the rubberized coatings make it worse. As soon as the rubberized undercoating gets a chip in it, it peels, moisture gets behind it and the rubberized undercoating just holds the salt and moisture against the panel.
Rainy Seattle is chockablock with 20 year old cars and hardly a one is rusting out... Super rare to see. It's the salt way more than the manufacturers fault.
The salt is the problem for sure. In areas that don't see salt, these things aren't much of a concern.

In theory, I wouldn't think they be any different but the pickup trucks seems to rust worse. Not that SUVs like Tahoes, Suburbans, Expeditions, etc. don't rust.
