I'm in China for a couple of weeks. Any cool things we can't get in the states I should get while I'm here? I really can't think of anything myself:-)

Kinder Eggs
Cuban cigars
There's probably some sort of cellphone that's unlocked there, that's half-broken here.

Find yourself an "underground" market and barter for knock-off watches and purses. Check for pearls too, if you're shopping for a wife or girlfirend. Old Mao memorabilia is pretty cool. There's always the touristy stuff: Chopstick sets, hanging scrolls and other art, tea sets and tea, your name rice paper. When you are at shops, haggle for everything. They know who you are and price accordingly. Haggling is great fun too.

Otherwise, some of the coolest thing are area specific. For example, I spent a week in Liuzhou for work. In the past, the city was know for, of all things, manufacturing big, ornate coffins. Most of the shops now sell miniature coffins. I keep one on my desk at work. It's a cool conversation piece that holds a specific meaning to the city.

Last time I was in Shanghai was with a co-wroker who had never been. We hit up a market and both got watches (mine is actually still working, I wore it today), I got a wallet for my wife, he got pearls for his wife, and we both bought some Chinese games for kids.

Nope. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
United States
The 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act contains a section highlighting that a confectionery product with a non-nutritive object, partially or totally embedded within it, cannot be sold within the United States, unless the FDA issues a regulation that the non-nutritive object has functional value. Essentially, the 1938 Act bans “the sale of any candy that has embedded in it a toy or trinket”.

In 2012, the FDA re-issued their import alert stating “The embedded non-nutritive objects in these confectionery products may pose a public health risk as the consumer may unknowingly choke on the object”.

You can get a tailored suit rather cheap. You could get an affordable arm sleeve tattoo. Make sure a new needle is used as hepatitis exceeds over 100 million people in China.

Yes the Kinder Surprise Eggs are available. I even see them at gas station marts. I like the thin, layered chocolate and I give the toys away. American children will immediately die if someone gives them a treat with a toy inside. Surprise!

Nice clothes, especially tailored suits are indeed a steal, and the quality can be very high. However, I'd make sure to not buy from a sweatshop. Ask them for a tour.

I did not know that. You cannot swing a dead cat without hitting a Kinder Egg here.

We can't swing dead cats either.

The US versions have a little plastic prong that pokes through the chocolate.

Was in Quebec last week and got some honest to god Cadbury's chocolate that didn't have the "vomit" ingredient Hersheys (who controls the Cadbury name stateside) inserts. The kids got dangerous eggs and lived to tell about it. We had a picnic at a rest area with well-mowed lawns and five trash cans, the Canadian Criminology deterrent to littering ("must be a crime of convenience.") The farmers list their fertilizers on little signs. Neat place.

I got hooked on a prong? Do I have to die now? Don't remember seeing a prong. Will buy an egg tomorrow and take a closer look. I only remember the wrapper, the chocolate egg and the yellow plastic clam shell with the toy inside.

I would agree on the tailored clothes. shirts as well.

Everything else, there's nothing special that is special to China to buy there, unless you are into weird eastern medicne.
It's just regular stuff that perhaps is knocked off or cheaper.

Perhaps random cheap gifts that you can give, like the equivilant of the $1 novelty cheap t-shirt section that have engrish on it.

[censored] no. don't buy anything in china that that you're going to eat just because it's available there. Maybe a specific chinese treat, but you're going to trust imported chocolates into china?

Maybe if you have a layover or connection in europe or you pick it up in the airport...
