for an older car... ?

I just got done decarboning and i suspect possible overheat, a minor one. it doesnt have a temperature gauge but when i revved it up to get coolant flowing through the engine, i heard a kind of "harsh" noise as if maybe the engine was starting to tell me it was getting too hot so i turned it off and i saw -some- not a lot but some whispy smoke, perhaps it minorly overheated as i say i caught it in time.. it was that, or the residual of the decarboning i did with Regane down the fuel hole.

Im going to let it cool an hour then check it out again, it was also doing the sputtering when i blipped th throttle to see if it would, thought that was srange but do cars start to do that as they get hotter?
no bubbles in the coolant so i think i shut it off in time.

thinking of 10W40 in thi car, 10W30 is working well but im starting to wonder (84 camaro V6)

I don't think you need 10W-40 in your car, a 10W-30 HM oil should work just fine, UNLESS you are getting knocking or excessive smoking.

Yes, thicker oils can take heat a bit better than thinner ones, but once you get your cooling situtation figured out, you're fine with 10W-30.

Sounds like you have other engine problems to work out first ... but addguy has a good suggestion. Now you didnt let it drink the de-carboning fluid too fast? That'll blow a head gasket pronto - or worse. Thiose cars need IMG - has the img been done? If not DO IT NOW if not yesterday

Im sorry.. IMG?

well i let the stuff be in the throttle body for a half hour or so, it smoked out the tailpipe now it desnt anymore

Zaedock: thanks

And you need a temp gauge in this car RIGHT NOW. They're $10 at most discount parts stores.

Worrying about what oil is going to make your car stop overheating and stalling is a little like the parable of "when your only tool's a hammer, every problem looks like a nail."

IMG = Intake Manifold Gasket.

They are a problem the MOST of GM 3.4L V-6's but CAN be a problem on earlier ones, just not as much.
