I am looking for an oil to run in my '03 silverado 5.3L with 230,000 miles. Engine runs great, no leaks, and does not burn any oil whatsoever. I have always been a big fan of M1 oils, but recently have been running Valvoline Max-life 5w30 synthetic blend. It is a good oil, and I have good oil pressure, 45-50 psi at highway speeds. I am wondering if running a bit of a thicker oil, like say M1 TDT 5w-40 would benifit my application beings it is a thicker oil, and may have better wear additives for a high mileage engine? I am sure bearing clearances in my engine are a lot looser than when new, so will a thicker oil like the M1 TDT be better? Thanks for any thoughts

Run whatever you've been running to get you where you are. You have lots of oil pressure, indicating things have NOT "loosened up" as you are thinking. And 230,000 miles is already quite high. Whatever got you where you are is worth continuing with.

Either M1 5W30 or M1 5W30 HM or Valvoline Max-life 5w30 full synthetic/synthetic blend is good, no need to go thicker than 5W30. You have good oil pressure with 5W30 and consume no oil, why change to thicker oil ?

If you use synthetic then you should extend OCI to 10-12k miles, if you go with Valvoline Max-life 5w30 synthetic blend then keep OCI to about 6-7k miles. Since you drive about 30k miles a year, you may want to try M1 5W30 EP and do 2 oil changes a year.

+1, standard M1 that you used (or I think you used), M1 HM or max-life would be perfect.

+1....M1 5w30EP would be perfect for your driving situation. Mobil gurantees this oil for 15K or one year...so you would only have two oil changes a year.

Use a good long OCI oil filter such as Mobil 1EP or Purolator PureOne. I'm using this combination right ecause I perfer longer OCI's.

You don't need to change a thing. But on the other hand, TDT is a very good oil.
