The British couldn't do that...as was spectacularly demonstrated, Hood (also a battlecruiser, not a battleship) had even-worse deck armor, a fact the British were well aware of. (In fact, Hood had been slated for a refit and up-armoring in 1941...it was pushed back because there simply weren't enough capital ships available to take her out of service.)
