Current thoughts: I'm planning an upgraded rim/tire package in a few years (probably less)I'm just looking to put a solid all season tire to replace to current tires. I've pretty much given up the thought of a real high milage tire, because it will NEVER see that milage warranty. So, that being said-my cuurent thoughts:


Mid range tire:

American Platinum (Private label Cooper @ Belle Tire)
Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP



Both of these tire trun 60K warranties, so it would be fine


Lower range:

Nexen 702SB- I know a few people who have this tire, and tends to do pretty well.
Starfire 340sf (private cooper label again) Also gets good local reviews
Kelly explorers


The mid range tires run around 300, the lower end around 250 out the door-your thoughts?
 
I think you are cheating yourself out of the better quality tires on the market. You seem to care about it, but are limiting yourself to off-brands. Just post a size if you want some ideas. The tires TR sells are better overall and have a vast database to support your decision. Seriously, do you think any of those stack up against a Eagle GT, RE960 or Conti Extreme?
 
You have time to shop. I am not very familiar with any of those brands you mention. You may get better feed back with a size & vehicle type. You mention all season so that should give you many choices. I am on my second set of Michelin Semmetry tires. I ran the first for 66,000 hwy mi, still had +25% tread and ran round and smooth as silk with normal rotations, never re balanced. The major brands seem to be better in the long run although you pay a bit more for them. I had Cooper Cobra tires before and they were bad lousey and needed replacements.

For a 14 inch tire? (195/70/14) I do care about tires, but I plan to do an upgrade to a 15 or 16 rim/tire package. That set will get the good tires! This is more of a get by for a while set, and could even be a winter set.

I'm tired of watching all the better tire get disappear in my size...

2004 Cavalier coupe with 195/70/14 tires.


Not very sporty I'll tell ya...
 
I have Altimax 195/60-14 on Mom's car and do believe RE960 comes in a few 14" sizes.

14" tires are so cheap in general, no need to skimp.

You asked for advice.

True. I'would have to double check those. I think the only Altimax in my size by general would be the RT.

The only issues I have with tires like the RT or the K21 (another tire I like) is that they tend to wear pretty fast around here. But our roads really do suck ...
 
You know, I had a set of 205/70/14 BFG Revelation Touring tires on the Camry, and they were very, very smooth, wore well, had adequate traction, and were inexpensive. I got them at Sears.
 
A lot of people like KUMHO, which are a Korean mfg. with many models and sizes. Like so many Korean things they seem to get better every year and still maintain an economy price while American mfg. keep prices high but quality slips. Classic Motorsports / Grass Roots Motorsports have had good reviews, esp. but not exclusively considering price.

I've got Nexen's and am very happy with them so far. They are on a Accord so I'm not doing any high performance driving but they do what they advertise and seem to be just as good as any other tire I've had on this car.
 
Where are you finding all these third tier tires? Here, they are just hard to find, unless you are having them shipped from the internet.

I have a saturn with 14 inch steel wheels. I ended up with a set of goodyear integrity tires installed for $290 with tax. If you go to Sams Club or Costco, they have very low prices. I was able to undercut them by a few bucks by going to one of those gimmick tire stores, for their buy 3 get one free promotion.

You mention tire/rim package. If you cross over to 15" rims it may open the door for more variety. I know you don't want to stray away for the stock tire size but if you bought 15" rims there are tires that will cross reference.
 
The Fuzion HRI tire is the best deal I'v made in a less expensive "H" rated tire in the last few years. They seemed very good. I ran them for about 20,000 mi when I sold the car and had lots of tread left. They are a tire put out by Brigestone and they put out good tires. If you went 15" 195/65/15 is the correct size. They should be around $50 ea.
 
I currently have Uniroyal AWP 195-70-14 tires on my 2001 Cavalier. They are a good tire in snow, quiet on the road and stay balanced. I had the same tires (from the factory) on a 1989 Cavalier and they had 85,000+ miles on them when I sold the car and they still had good tread life left on them.

I've heard good things about them. I guess it helps that they are owned by Michelin. I had them on my s-10, and they were great tires. (not the AWP though) Mom had a set of TPs on they were also very good.

Not enough money at the moment for the both. Otherwise I would do that right now.
