It's time to go boarding again amd was looking for advice from hunters skiers etc outside adventurers on the board. I'm looking a buying a new set of thermal underwear that has moisture wicking properties and was wondering what features or brannds to look for/stay away from. In the pas I grabbed whatever was on the rack at target etc. As a side note would it be better tio go to an REI, or Sports authority type place or is that just going to add price without extra quality,

I dont have the brand name off hand but they came from Gander Mountain. The top and bottom are sold seperately and are around $100.00 for the pair, its like under armour just a tick thicker, VERY, VERY WARM.. if your doing heavy physical activity they may be to warm, i know just walking out to my tree stand i can break a sweat in winter weather wearing them. they are grey in colour. sorry i dont have the name..

Under Armour. Their Cold Gear is worth every penny. Get the original Cold Gear, not any of the fancier/newer stuff. I can wear that stuff for 12 hours at a stretch without irritation, and even up to 24 hours with only mild irritation (4 dudes in a car pulling an all-nighter heading to Vermont on 5-6 occasions). The Target/Wal-Mart stuff is cheap trash by comparison.

Merino - we have 40 million sheep to make it from. By exploiting the 70 million possums you can have a merino/possum mix.

IMO...Nothing beats Merino wool. Check out the Filson line and also the Great DuoFold Union Suits made with Meino Wool blend.

For me, I like the Duofold Union suits in traditional red for bitter cold. Nothing is better....IMO.

Very hard to beat silk for warmth vs weight vs bulk. It's available in different weights. Your other layers will easily slide over it, so it's great for active winter sports. Feels great against your skin. Will never chafe. No pilling or getting gamey with age. You can wash it in a sink with some shampoo, roll it up in a dry towel, and it'll quickly dry so it's great for extended trips/camping. Mother Nature wins this one hands down!

I have a bunch of patagonia merlino wool capilene line. It used to be made in USA, may not any more. Likely filson is.

Whatever U choose, avoid anything with cotton! I've used polypropelene (sp) for years and it works very well. Have not tried under armour yet but have heard good reviews.
