to do it right the first time.

But all the time in the world to get it right the second time.

That's where you're mistaken. It did/was done as designed the first time. The second time is to figure out how to repair the damage.

Was given the adage today by a colleague.

There's always a huge rush to git'er done...then a concentrated, step wise effort to do it correctly when the first doesn't work.

Well there's deadlines to meet Tempest.

Reminds me of a dilbert cartoon where his boss drew a Gannt chart. "I've assumed that any process that I don't understand tiakes an infinitely short amount of time to complete...and your dealing is..."

At the shop, I always dreaded 'comebacks'.
My first fix there many years ago resulted in a comeback, and never since. This results in a different approach, a different mental mind set.
As s side note, if a customer says "I'm going to sell it, just get it fixed as cheaply as possible.", you can be sure the car will be owned/showing up for at least 2 years or more.

What I often wish I could do over again are things I say. Better ideas and phrasing often comes afterwards.
