Here is the post I responded to … you connected distraction at speed to push button start. They don’t connect … Further … there are not two hundred members who are against push button start … maybe a couple members who posted a hundred times …This is on a forum that have those that complain about the (very convenient) push button start being "too much tech". OR-the electronic parking brake being evil. I'm sure the touchscreens have a dim or even a "go-dark" mode for night driving.
Next silly thing please.....
OMG technology run away things were so much better in the past. I loved trying to read an outdated paper map, and getting lost.......

The push-button start thing IS pretty silly thoughThat’s a poor attempt at correlation … Not sure how you wound up so judgmental - but it’s almost daily, huh ?
… this member raised what some see as a genuine safety issue … But for you, silly ?
Wait … the starter button or Stop/Start ?The push-button start thing IS pretty silly though![]()
Excellent points made. Not a problem in my Tesla with it’s 15” screen.
They’re only a distraction if the screen:
- Is too bright
- Is too low resolution
- Doesn’t have a good dark mode
- Is low quality so it doesn’t have true black
Over the course of your life you will have to adapt to changes. The touchscreen in a automobile is just one and a small one at that. Eventually the entire instrument panel will be one touchscreen.
I see similar things while driving; it's getting ridiculous.I'm with you on this... Saw a woman in her Tesla swerving all over the road today. When she came to a stop at the red light, I noticed she was fiddling with the giant screen AND her Cell Phone which she has somehow attached to the screen. Nice. Whatever just happened to just "driving"??
No, you're not. It's bad enough we have idiots texting while they're driving. Now this. I'm surprised the DOT allows this nonsense. Every year there appears to be something new on the market, that will succeed in keeping people looking at everything, except where they are going. And if that isn't bad enough, we diminish they're driving skills with features like automatic parallel parking, and lane departure prevention.
What's next, a dispenser on the dash to administer Valium and Ambien?
No, you're not alone in this concern.
A few people I know have Teslas with big screens, and while as a passenger I enjoy watching the screen for its entertainment value, as the driver I find the large screens both annoying and distracting.
I just think it's a skill you should have and yes we have been making life easier for man kind which is good to a point, but when we start automating easy things it just makes us weaker/softer.Why do you care wether a human or robot parallel parks?
Humans have been automating arduous or annoying tasks for ages.
The button, the objection some members have to it here is beyond ludicrous. Some of the claims were totally out to lunch on it too.Wait … the starter button or Stop/Start ?
What is there to be distracted by? Changing a song or turning on the butt warmer?
Anything "distracting" about these screens pales in comparison to grabbing my 250 disc wallet from the back seat and trying to find the right Ministry album.
It's not like these things are playing YouTube while driving.
That button is number 1 … killing S/S is button 2 …The button, the objection some members have to it here is beyond ludicrous. Some of the claims were totally out to lunch on it too.
On the touchscreen thing, yes, if poorly executed, it can certainly be distracting. I'm a big fan of HUD's now, I think that's about as "ideal" as you can get, with the information that's important projected on the windshield.

That’s the problem with over integration of these things. In the rain at night … I can turn mine off … Some vehicles are becoming too dependent on this screen …While some vehicles are better designed than others, even when a screen is adjusted, it still reflects back in the drivers' face at night. This is not so much an issue on well lit city streets, but when you're on a twisty, dark, country, backroad, having a large lit screen, is both distracting and irritating.
Secondly, as others have noted, knobs and buttons can be operated by touch; even the most ergonomic screen, by design, forces me to look at it to make adjustments.
