The Size Of Touchscreens Is Getting Ridiculous!

Having a touch screen in an automobile is ridiculous. It causes much more distraction to the driver. I would take the old fashioned push buttons and levers any day of the week. I just want to get from point A to point B. I don't need to do it in the Star Ship Enterprise.
The climate controls etc are all redundant on my vehicles … I think touch screens could be limited to Navigation with no wheel speed. Otherwise they all have voice interactions …

1972: Who finds the radio knobs and buttons and the climate control sliders and buttons distracting ? Do we need these ? Why can't we just drive in silence and whatever the outside temperature/weather is, just deal with it.

How long does it take? Because touch screens have been around for more than a decade.

I wonder, was the built-in 8 tack considered distracting? The hand wringing never really changes.
His point is the screen size getting bigger (and some are lower) … the IIHS and MIT are conducting studies that include all distractions … it’s real to them …
Oblique comments don’t really deal with the actual marketing trends … let’s have big screens and hellcat engines

History repeats itself. Buick was actually the 1st…. In 1986 with a 9” touch screen. And back then people complained of the whole “OMG DISTRACTING!” thing. I only found the 8.4” Uconnect distracting in my 300 because it, along with the LCD dash, didn’t dim enough for my own personal preference.

Still have to take my eyes off the road to turn the knobs in my truck to set the temperature perfectly or make sure I set the vent position where I want it 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's sweet!! I had no idea that in 1986 there was even such a thing as a touch screen.

A little trivia. Anyone here know what movie influenced that Buick commercial?

Over the course of your life you will have to adapt to changes. The touchscreen in a automobile is just one and a small one at that. Eventually the entire instrument panel will be one touchscreen.
Do you know Mazda may not agree … read up

The 2022 Tundra boasts an optional 14" touchscreen; the 2022 Silverado is 13+ inches, if memory serves.

When I was a child, I watched TV on a 13" screen.

The size of some touchscreens is getting ridiculous, and now automakers are making them larger and larger so as to hold bragging rights as to whose touchscreen is largest.

What's my issue? The massive touchscreens are a HUGE distraction, especially at night. And while I seldom pay attention to what others do/buy, the thought of having a distracted driver next to, or behind me, isn't a pleasant thought.

Am I the only person with this concern?
For all the more reason for them to be in ur pockets. Lol

Coming from Bell Labs and a high Tech startup that made development parts for Tesla, Bosch and GM a decade ago.
I say this is a bunch of junk that should NOT be in the car.

Wife HATES her touch screen in her new Outback. She couldn't even get the defroster going the other day.
But she is becoming a bit of a technophobe.

Make cars that steer and handle well. Most are absolutely atrocious.

The OEM's had to do something, peoples arms are getting tired holding their phones up while driving.
Bluetooth through the AM/FM radio. Standard everywhere. Doesn't require a giant screen. Just audio commands.
I'm not in sales, so this junk all gets shut off when I'm driving. I have severe ADD, so it is pretty much mandantory.
I even have to shut off the passenger, if there is one.

If I see someone on the highway driving head down, holding their phone - I dive bomb at their door while laying on the horn.
Many or not fazed by even that - and my car has a 1970 Ford LTD horn.

I think my parents lives their whole life under that philosophy. I think they assumed all those knobs were just knicknacks waiting to break and cause trouble. My mom in particular; she only turned on the radio if it looked like there was a terrible storm approaching and she wanted to hear the forecast.

...features like automatic parallel parking...
Don't mean to derail this but if you can't parallel park you shouldn't be allowed to drive. When I took my first drivers exam they made you parallel park, I had no problem but I did fail my first test because I stopped past a stop sign, doh!

My only concern with the huge screens is that I feel they make the dash look ridiculous. It's just hard to integrate them well.
