Greetings and salutations worthy friends in the land of the Great Bitog:

Maybe you've heard the expression, "The Lord watches over drunkards and fools." I'm here to tell ya I'm living proof to the truth of that well worn phrase - and I wasn't drinking.

Last Saturday, our community had our annual "Post Office Food Drive." It's a program where each postal patron has the option of putting a few cans or boxes of food in a bag and hanging it on their mailbox for the postal person to pick up and carry in. This food is then taken to a central point where it is divided among local food pantries to be given to those who are in need.

I've been involved in this for years and as usual, hooked up my trusty dusty trailer behind "Thunder the Wonder Pig" to do some food hauling.

We started at 8:00 am and worked hard hauling food till 6:00 pm that evening. I drove all over town loading, hauling, unloading, reloading, hauling and delivering. Finally the day came to an end and I head home. I back into my yard to park my trailer in it's resting spot. Having parked, I jump out of the car to unhook said trailer. I reach under the car to remove the pin that holds the receiver hitch in place - only there is no pin. It's not kinda, sorta hanging in there or just about to fall out - it's totally and completely gone. Apparently, in my early morning haste, when I hooked up the trailer, I never installed the pin.

What should have happened is that even before making it out of the yard in the morning, the receiver hitch should have pulled out, but instead, it held and I hauled literally tons of canned goods from "A" to "B" from sun to sun.

Said receiver hitch is not rusty, it slides in and out with ease, and yet it stayed in place for 10 hours of hauling, not to mention the trip there and the trip home.

Yes my friends, God does watch out for drunkards and fools, and I hadn't had a drop to drink.

Glad no one was hurt!

I think that the more honest among us will recognize similar events in our lives in which we did not suffer the consequences of a major mistake or oversight.

cheers,
Astro

It's good to hear you got a pass on that goof-up. Something like that could have been ugly. Collecting food, a noble effort, one I always respect. My wife and daughter volunteer at a local food kitchen (although sometimes my daughter needs a little encouraging, so be it).

What's "Thunder the Wonder Pig"?
I missed that one.
(I'm almost afraid to ask.)

Yes, as much as we've all had unlucky incidents, we've probably had as many lucky ones too.

If you have enough tongue weight on the mount, even a non-rusty ball mount can be difficult to pull out of a receiver, especially if the Wonder Pig wasn't doing any holeshots!

Good story!

I recall dad tell me years ago, he set a cup of coffee (typical ceramic mug) on the rear bumper of the Astro van we had at the time. Forgot about it. Drove at least 20 miles from home. Over at least one set of railroad tracks. We lived in Maine at the time, so typical Downeast roads.

Mug was right where he left it when he got to where he was going. That, or when he got home, I forget which.

Correct, those who disbelieve have never experienced a true Blessing.

CreeGuy, I'm eternally happy that you got away with it, it certainly was a lucky happenstance that could have been tragic.

I doubt that the supreme deity was involved directly in this particular instance, bar having forseen such a possibility a few billion years ago, and designed in the same laws of physics that keep a pot plant holder suspended on a post, or a pole dancer off the ground.
