Double layer of filter media. Metal screen to hold the element in place. Silicone anti-drainback valve. Could Fram actually be building something good or is it an illusion?

Fram isnt exactly horrid, Its just overpriced low quality "no bang for the buck" orange cans.

And I'm guessing the one you posted costs around 10$, that puts it up into competition with M1 filters etc.

cardboard endcaps and horror stories aside. They arent so much bad as overpriced. I can go buy a somewhat better motorcraft filter for 3$ or a fram thats not as good for 5$ which am I going to buy?

8 bucks at my local walmart. It is the only filter fram makes that is worth the money. I prefer AcDelco cans for 3-4 dollars vs a fram orange can of death for 5 dollars. [censored] I will take a AcDelco filter over the 8 dollar fram filter. But I run non-synthetic 4k OCIs.

This^ cutaways looks promising.

Most of the upper offerings from Fram are very good in terms of construction ..even to the point of overkill. Mesh reinforced media is usually reserved for the Euro-types that sport 30lb bypass valves.

..but, as was said, for your average application they're just not competitive in price.

I've used a few. They are very good quality filters, maybe even a little over-built. I'd feel quite comfortable running one for a long OCI with a synthetic, or leaving one on for 2 with dino as I was doing. They are also definitely over-priced, even when I used to find them on sale at $2 off. I never see them on sale here anymore. I tend to use cheaper filters now and change them out with every oil change.

For the 50 cents I paid for them, I'd definitely use them

I might use one this winter for a planned 6 month OCI with Castrol Edge. Either that, a Honda OEM, Bosch or a Napa Gold... I still haven't decided.
