UK is quite the land of contrasts. They allow, for example, in some areas, sharia law to take set/take precedent, but then there is tripe like this, plus their density of pubiccams is pretty much near the top. Folks, China has arrived in more than just rotten goods.

Back on topic.
Reading material.
That Bacon guy is my long distant relative on my maternal side. A short jump from my uncle James Bacon, who developed the Bacon avocado. Other than that bacon is just one of the food groups.

Sir meat candy is mostly good for things like quotes and teasing Gary, IMO.

At any rate, the quip about him in the beginning of that reading material could be slightly misleading; he spent quite a bit of time pointing out the shortcomings in the thought processes of certain folks and is very commonly cited as an empiricist (with solid justification in doing so).

Another error hath proceeded from too great a reverence, and a kind of adoration of the mind and understanding of man; by means whereof men have withdrawn themselves too much from the contemplation of nature, and the observations of experience, and have tumbled up and down in their own reason and conceits. Upon these intellectualists, which are notwithstanding commonly taken for the most sublime and divine philosophers, Heraclitus gave a just censure, saying, men sought truth in their own little worlds, and not in the great and common world; for they disdain to spell, and so by degrees to read in the volume of God's works: and contrariwise by continual meditation and agitation of wit do urge and as it were invocate their own spirits to divine and give oracles unto them, whereby they are deservedly deluded.

alan , london,

I tend to think those that say this aren't terribly good students of history.

He was correct as far as he went. He left off the footnote

If you've done nothing wrong(*) then you've got nothing to hide.

* Wrong is defined by "authorities" and their minions. It includes violations of known laws or any action that potentially threatens their authority.

Ah, but even the anointed pork belly is surely entitled to his own delusions of validity in expressing his pointless point of view.

(visions of having pork belly say that quote to me in intellectual "disgust" and having raging Gary say, Yeah-yeah ..I got your delusion right HERE!! My grandeur, although delusional, is very real, PAL!! something along the lines of Belushi with the guitar guy on the stairway in Animal House

Indeed. :)

I need to watch V for Vendetta again.

They are not seeking out what porn individual people like.
This is obviously a security based knowledge base of information.
Distasteful, but today's problems , terrorist, and plots require some action.
Too late is too late concerning information.

You necessary yourself into an Orwellian future. If you don't ..someone will provide a little push to help it along.

If you need this sort of stuff, then the terrorists have won.

Given the road tolls in each of our respective countries, continuous monitoring and reporting of vehicles speeds, locations and controls inputs would save more lives than this anti terrism stuff ever will, but I don't think anybody here would accept those removals of liberty.

Driving to work this morning, I passed a fleet of black vehicles, including a water cannon. They are heading towards Bathurst, for the race weekend.

Interesting that they've changed the livery to black, and renamed themselves "Public Order and Riot Squad."

Would have thought that a brighter colour would be more effective.

Black, which isn't a color, is psychologically rather effective. Black conveys power, authority, menace and evil.

Why do they always conform to the futurists depictions? Does fiction predict the future ..or form it by giving them ideas?

Just wait 'til the Darth Vader uniforms come in!

I nominate this thread for BITOG top ten of all time based solely on the mention of Guy Fawkes.

You know, I went along with the knee-jerk reaction to that movie when it came out and avoided it. But when it hit HBO, I watched it...and watched it...and watched it.....

Seriously, I TIVO'd it and must have watched it every night for two weeks. I love that movie. Scary that it seems to be pointing the way the UK is actually going!

Which brings me to another question that always gives me pause...why don't we have more Brits on here????? I know I am always posting links to bitog on saabcentral, which has a hefty Brit presence....
