The Air Tool Argument

I use both and don’t care what others use but I just want to address something I read in the OP:

“Cordless tools die after a couple years”

That hasn’t been the case for me. I have lots of cordless tools that are 10 years old or more and still work fine.
 
23 years ago when I started my career air tools were king. IR impact guns, snapon FAR72 air ratchets were kings of their domain. We used air powered everything. Today, I couldnt tell you the last time an air impact was used in our shop. We have a pair of Dewalt DCF900B impacts that will walk circles around any air impact. Dad uses his as his all purpose 1/2 impact, I use my Ridgid as my regular gun and the dewalt only for really stubborn stuff because it hurts my wrists. It has been so long since I touched an air impact that I couldnt actually tell you where my MG725 is at the moment. At the moment, the only air tools that see regular use, besides lifts, tire changer, tire inflators ,and cooling system filler are our air hammers and cut off wheels. Occasionally where space is tight we will use an air powered body saw for cutting as opposed to a battery reciprocating saw but thats about it.
 
As a long time DIY, cordless is so much easier to use. No need to start up or wait for the compressor, no cycle time or noise. No snake like tripping hazards on the floor... I still have my 30 gal. USA made compressor and various air tools, but they get used less and less.

Especially if you have multiple battery units and don't have to change sockets all the time.

I also like the intelligent settings on the battery tools. Helps to prevent damage on fasteners.
Once you get the hose off the floor and have pipe on the wall, it really changes this. Just installed my air pipes very recently and I’m smacking my head at not doing it years ago.

If I want air, I plug a hose into a manifold and open a ball valve. The line is already pressurized.

It closer to getting water for your garden now. Connect the hose and turn on the spigot.

Before I did the piping, I’d often grab cordless for a quick task precisely because of the extra work the air required. But then I’d often end up needing the air anyway so it was a Pyrrhic victory.

I still think cordless makes sense the more casual a person is. The more you do metal or automotive work in depth, the faster it shifts to air being the more useful and less limiting option. I’m still not seeing a cordless needle scaler for sale. And there’s no cordless option that fits as well around some really tight hub/control arm interfaces for suspension and brake work.

Not everything can be automated. Sometimes you just do it by hand. Things like breaking loose badly rusted fasteners simply need feel no power tools can provide. But I find I can use a power option earlier and more effectively with air. And as I get stiffer and even more arthritic, that matters more to me.
 
I have a good high dollar air system in my shop & still prefer battery operated impacts & ratchets.......It's dragging an air hose around & having to switch the hose to different tools that bothers me. You can have 5 battery impacts lined up with different sockets & go to town!

There’s definitely no free lunch and your post is bang on.

The tool swap hassle I addressed by just running 12 air hoses in parallel to my work point so I can keep all the tools connected at once.

Just kidding. Can you imagine?

Kidding aside, I think a good coupler like the Prevosts helps. These days I love that little 5-in-1 with the sliding collar. Effortless swaps since you don’t fight line pressure. HF has a Merlin copy of the Milton that is great and affordable.
 
I can't have any cordless tools, I have no place to charge them or store the batterys. And will never leave one alone in any indoor building I have. It's bad enough trusting the coin battery's.
 
I reach for the E tools first. But here in a salt zone the air tools come out a lot for large fasteners.
I never leave batteries on the chargers unattended. Too many issues with lithium batteries on chargers unattended.
 
It really isn't a question of one vs the other. As always it depends on the job or task at hand, "the right tool for the job."
If you ever do much interior work, things like removing a dashboard, air tools are pretty frustrating to use there.

True, but to be fair, EVERY tool is frustrating in that situation. I despise interior work.

"A day in the life" experience is having to work on an interior after doing filthy exterior work.
More time can be spent trying to keep a light colored interior clean, than doing the actual job. Dropping a headliner after a brake job, is Fun!

Since I moved from wrench turning occupationally to engineering, I'm happy to say I've only had to do that kind of stuff rarely. But you are spot on.

I've learned to embrace the nitrile glove life, buy them several boxes at a time.
 
In a shop setting, whereas you have power and air, cordless tools are a waste of time, unless you use them a lot, or you have a gigantic shop with no power outlets or air line system.

In a mobile setting, or in construction, they are much more convenient and efficient.

For most, other than a cordless drill, an array of cordless tools is a waste of money. One can outfit a shop for life with electric tools, that will last forever, as opposed to letting batteries rot in the shop, not being used.
 
the air powered tools are & more professional type used in more shops, but still air over elec. are really up to the user, the bad thing about Elec. (battery) is the lack of longtivity of use on the job, (recharging) and the cost of battery replacement, as pricing a couple of 5 or 6 amp batt. or more, well you starting to think of the cost of a compressor ,and pneumatic seems more reliable in the long run, so really the choice will always be divided only to the one using the correct tool for the job.
 
Do professional shops wear out cordless batteries? The Li-ion battery is supposed to last 1000 charges. That's a long long time for me for cordless tool batteries but maybe a pro shop only a year or two.

Absolutely they do.

The cordless tools are following the Gillette business model where they make a tool cheaper to make money off the batteries.

The 5.0 Makita batteries I could once get for $100 are now $160 each. Same exactly batteries.

Inside are 10 18650 cells. $7ea, there's $70 worth (at retail) of cells in the thing. Makita I'm sure can buy them for half that.

Which means you're paying $100 or more for a plastic housing and small $3 controller board.

And you'll be doing that every year or two in a pro usage environment.


In a home DIY use, a battery rarely dies. I think I've lost exactly one of my 14 Makita batteries. They're very well made, at least.
 
Air tools are no longer cool. Cordless isn't the future--it's the present, right?

Cordless tools provide two key benefits: convenience and efficiency. Of these two, convenience is overwhelmingly the reason people chose a cordless tool. A cordless tool powered by a modern LiPo battery is also quite efficient in terms of energy; the energy out of it vs what it took in to charge the battery is far more efficient than using air as a hydraulic medium.

But as you get more serious in hobbyist and mechanical ability, you will soon find that the argument for air tools really becomes no contest. As you progress in ability, it doesn't take long to get to the point where air tools crush cordless:
  • All air tools are power-agnostic. You can freely mix compressors and tools and the tool doesn't care what brand the compressor is. An air compressor from 1965 can effectively power a 2026 air tool. But the opposite is also true--an air tool from 1965 runs perfectly fine on a brand new compressor.
  • With even a minimum of maintenance, an air tool lasts effectively forever. A vane motor that's oiled will last decades. Likewise for hammers and piston mechanisms.
  • An air tool is lighter and physically smaller for almost any tasks apples-to-apples vs a cordless tool.
  • Many air tools have no cordless alternative. Media blasting, spray painting, and even hammers and impact tools generally do not have cordless analogs. And where there are cordless alternatives, often they are physically larger and heavier and have less run time available.
  • Air tools are safe in hazardous environments. You will never have a battery catch fire or an electrical short out on an air tool. Simple, reliable. Indeed, hazardous environments are the main reason air tools were even brought into existence.
  • Quality air tools generally have far less vibration and are much easier on the human user in terms of ergonomics when you combine the lower vibration with the smaller size and lighter weight.

A couple examples which hopefully aren't cherry-picked to kind of show the state of the cordless-vs-air tradeoff.

I have two power ratchets, one cordless and one air. The cordless ratchet is this Makita. It cost $140 for just the bare tool, has a max torque of 35 lb-ft and a max RPM of 800. It's 15" long.

But the air ratchet is this Astro 1128 which is 700rpm and 50lb-ft while being less than half as long, narrower and much smaller in every dimension while being fully reactionless as well.

The bread and butter of cordless tools is the impact driver. This is the tool that got me into cordless because it basically didn't exist as a corded tool or an air tool. They have gotten incredible. A current tech cordless impact is an incredible tool, capable of removing lug nuts, drilling holes and such and going it all in an incredible compact and lightweight tool. They are the F1 car of power tools.

This makita, for example, has advanced "smart" torque controls for speed and RPM, is compact at 5.5" deep and yet still packs nearly 1600 in-lb sufficient to tighten an M16 bolt! These impact drivers--and the DeWalt and Milwaukee offerings are at least as capable-- are truly incredible tools. What does an air tool offer like this?


There really isn't a pneumatic alternative in terms of advanced controls. The closest tool would be something like this excellent SP air tool that has no "smart" controls whatsoever.

The air impact is both physically larger and less powerful, although still putting out 100lb-ft and quite sufficient for just about anything where a 1/4 hex is suitable.

But here's the thing-- even when you pick the very BEST cordless tool where it has its biggest advantage over pneumatic, you're still left with a throwaway tool that will last a couple years and die. It it's basically tuned like an F1 engine and has similar durability and performance. The pneumatic tool won't give quite F1 performance, but it will get quite close while giving a tool that has a lifetime measured in decades while having superior smoothness and vibration. It requires a bit more skill to use, but rewards the users who possess it.


So we have two anecdotal examples, one where the advantage goes clearly to air and another where the advantage clearly goes to cordless, at least in terms of performance and power-to-weight.

What about some other tools?
Impact wrenches
are increasingly becoming more and more capable in cordless. Claims are all over the place, which is why you need a trustworthy source like the Torque Test Channel's tool ranking list.

Right now, the top 1/2 battery impact is the DeWalt DCF961, a 650lb-ft beast that will torture a 1/2" square drive anvil and socket to their limit. It weighs 9.2# and costs $350 for a bare tool, and it will physically assault the user even as it bust nuts (and square drives). It's not smooth and it's violent. And like many newer cordless, it's a disposable tool with a couple years of longevity at most in heavy usage.

The Astro Thor G2--as the top air impact-- can't purely compete on brute power, as it's "only" 580lb-ft in the same working torque test. But the Astro is only $180, is just over half the weight at 5.2#, will fit tons of places you don't have a chance of fitting that huge deWalt, and is much smoother and more durable.

As you larger in impact size the disparity becomes larger. You can get a fully functional and quite effective Harbor Freight impact wrench that will deliver an honest 1300lb-ft (in Torque Tests own testing) for $340 as a 1" pistol grip impact. It weighs 15#. The Milwaukee 2868-20 is much longer, weight 5# more before you even put a battery on it, and costs $1000 as a bare tool.



There's plenty more comparison that can illustrate this point, but all will show a variation of the following theme: air tools are generally lighter, more compact, cheaper, smoother, and far more durable in a given power class of tool. And in the rare cases where they don't win on all these points at same time, they certainly are far more compelling overall. Look at an air angle grinder vs a cordless or corded equivalent and be shocked at the size and weight difference.

Cordless is super convenient and portable. But there's a lot that is given up in the name of portability, and I strongly suspect many people are throwing money away buying disposable cordless tools and replacing batteries when there's probably a smarter solution. Air tools are often that smarter solution. If you really need portable, there's the pneumatic analog of a battery...

Cordless tools are here to say--they meet a legit need and do it very well. But what started out as primarily useful for contractors building buildings with no electricity where miles of air hoses were super inconvenient and unsafe (tripping) has morphed into a misguided sense of trying to make cordless tools fit where they are often a pretty poor solution overall.

Horses for courses--pick the tool that works best for the application. And for me and my mechanic and metalworking purposes, that comes down to about 80/20 air vs cordless.

ANd it will only increase now that I have a major compressor upgrade in the work along with permanent air piping in my garage.
I got some of my dad's air tools, some of them are around 50 years old and still work.
My 20 year old battery powered tools had the original batteries go dead 5 to 10 years ago. I can buy trashy cheap knock off batteries for now. If the voltage is close enough I can buy a battery upgrade adaptor for a moden battery for some things.
