Tesla Roadster II back on?

Top fuel dragsters are now pushing 10,000 horsepower plus, and the rear tires are used once.
They really are amazing to watch. But they don't defy the laws of physics. Remember, I live 4 miles from the former Moroso/PBIR dragstrip and track. Was a regular there until the day they closed. The idea that Musk can't pull it of is incorrect.

I think I remember hearing that the Top Fuel cars go 0-60 in 0.3 seconds.

I don't think Elon's claims for the 0-60 times for the roadster are an intention to "pump the stock". I doubt the small number of investors who think that is really important to Tesla's success are going to move the needle a measurable amount.

What all you Tesla and Elon haters seem to overlook is the fact that the Model Y outsold the ubiquitous Toyota Camry last year. I'll bet the CEO's of every other automaker in the world would be as happy as a pig in slop if they had a model that outsold the Camry, ICE -or- EV.

Yes, EV's are not for everyone. Yes, the still need a lot of development. Yes there aren't a billion of them out there.
But there are enough people out there buying Tesla Model Y's to outsell the longtime best selling ICE Camry.

Regarding whether or not Tesla will not meet expectations for Q1, whose expectations ? Those of the Wall St. analysts that have been wrong for the last couple of years, or Tesla's own projections ? We'll know in about 4 weeks what the Q1 2024 numbers look like. My guess is once again they will be up YOY and will be more profitable per vehicle than any other automaker. And once again there will be some nattering nabobs of negativism that aren't impressed.

And Elon will continue to NGAF what others think of him.

Some do. I always hear the comment that the car has no soul because it doesn’t make any noise sitting still. I get that sound can be part of the experience, though for some that seems to be an absolute deal breaker and the whole experience.

That’s more one trick than some claim about EVs. You know, the whole thing where they’re supposedly only fast in a straight line. Many of them handle extremely well, but that’s almost never considered.
Regress it.

People have been putting exhausts on total dog cars sincs forever. In fact, its some car's entire identity, like the 2V 4.6L mustang.

So, it makes sense historically.

I recently read somewhere they're pushing 12,000 HP. Insane!!!!!
The engine also only turns 500 revolutions by the time it makes it down the track, assuming 9500 RPM.

9500 RPM / 60 = 158.3 x 3.5 ET = 554 revs. Add some extra for the burnout.

The ($250,000 deposit) scam continues. Production now might start in 2027 with deliveries maybe in 2028. More than 10 years after it was announced…

Old thread, but I'll take a look at the Tesla Roadster if it ever reaches production. Our Model S Plaid is fine, but it's boring. It simply lacks the visceral appeal of high performance ICE powered vehicles, IMO.

As for the mention of Top Fuel Dragsters. How much measurable power they produce on any given run, depends on the track and atmospheric conditions and tuning. Producing power isn't the problem, it's getting that power to the ground without overwhelming available traction. Teams are able (but not all teams do) to measure the all-important performance of the clutch, by measuring the torque passing through the driveline. When the clutch pack locks up, and the tires are still gripping the ground, determining the horsepower being produced is just a calculation. The horsepower produced is interesting, but secondary to evaluating the clutch performance.

12k horsepower is by no means the most power measured in current times.

Most are doing 0-100 mph in <.8 seconds. Which means by the 60 foot mark they are already doing more than 100 mph.

Someone mentioned that the rear tires are only used once. If they are ruined during their first pass, that's true. But if the car setup matches the track conditions, and chunks of rubber don't come off the tires, they can be used multiple times. We like a 'seasoned' set of tires, as they can perform better than a fresh set.

@02SE good post, but I tend to focus less on race cars as compared to cars I can actually use. The AWD M3P puts the poser to the ground almost seamlessly which is why, as you point out, it is so fast. The motor flat torque curve has to be somewhat modulated right off-idle.

$55K for a 10 second car...

Elon Musk says we will see the Roadster II late this year; production next year. @UncleDave get your check book out!
Oh yeah, the top model will do 0-60 < 1 second...

Elon time again? Well, somebody's gotta show the Nevera ($2M) and Battista ($3M) how America builds a real Supercar!

"Tonight, we radically increased the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster.
There will never be another car like this, if you could even call it a car."

With panel gaps and cheap quality like the Cybertruck? According to electric.co

"Tesla delays ‘flying’ Roadster demo to April Fools’ Day, production to 2027/28"

If anyone thinks this is going to "Show Rimac how a real supercar is built" I have another thing coming. It won't fly, Musk is apparently using illegal substances again. If it flies it will need FAA certification end of story.
Engineering Explained Tesla Roadster
If anyone can do the math (as several Tesla owners and engineers on here should be able)
  • A 0-60 mph time under one second would require an acceleration of roughly
    1762621823347.gif
    2.75g or MORE!
  • This level of force would cause standard street tires to spin uncontrollably, as they cannot maintain enough grip to transfer that much power to the road.Achieving this speed would require either an extremely sticky, prepared drag strip surface, or additional thrust to create more downforce.
    or more.
The optional "SpaceX package" uses cold gas thrusters, but these are a one-time boost and not a continuous system.
The system would require significant modifications to the car, such as replacing the rear seats with a large compressed air tank and compressor.
The thrusters would need to provide a large amount of thrust, around 23,000 newtons, to compensate for the electric drivetrain's force and the limitations of the tires.
This is absolutely the dumbest thing that Musk has proposed to date. High pressure compressed tanks like nitrous oxide are illegal on the street how is this any different. Tesla deserves to go bankrupt with this dog and pony show.

They don't have any driving prototypes. How are they going to sell this next year? Just asking?

Roadster will be cool. It seems having an insane flagship product helps sales of lower end products as well. That said, I think stuff like it having a jet engine is absurd. Just make a very fast, very fun to drive car, and get it done ASAP.

I'd rather see them put effort into a full-size 3-row SUV based on the Cybertruck platform with perhaps slightly more normal looks. Model X is just not square enough or big enough to be a good family AND stuff hauler like a Suburban or EV9.

They have a three-row model Y on sale just for the Chinese market. The Autopian just wrote an article about it. Most surmise that it would steal the last few sales from the X.
Model Y Long Wheelbase
Tesla wouldn't rub me the wrong way if Musk wouldn't say ludicrous stuff. The electric hypercar is already here. Nothing but a few posers will buy the new roadster because it says Tesla on it. Keep in mind 20 really dumb people back in 2017 gave Tesla a $250,000 deposit for a roadster. Essentially an interest free loan. Imagine if they'd actually invested that $250,000.
A halo vehicle is good ala the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, Ford GT. None of those ceos claimed their vehicles would "fly".

Musk should contact area 51. And Bob Lazar to see if he can get one of those alien spaceship warp drives. Every time I hear Musk claim the roadster will "fly" I think of back to the future. "A flying Delorean, I haven't seen one of those in twenty years. "

Elon really is the problem. He's a bit divisive. It's just not needed in the business environment.

I have a question... why not just make a Roadster shaped car on the platform of the Model 3, put S/X Plaid drivetrain in it, fast-track HW5 and make it the first HW5 vehicle...? Throw in a cool interior and maybe built-in Starlink? Like... people would be super happy to get the car they put a deposit on and it would still be awesome. Anyone who made a deposit who wouldn't accept that car can just get a refund...

“the most exciting, whether it works or not, demo ever of any product.”

April 2026 (Elon time)... There are some specific job openings in Palo Alto.
