Good points, My thinking was more based on Windows personal computers.Couple of decades off here, the personal computers were already being developed in the early 70s, with kits computers like the Altair 8800 being available in Dec 74. Apple 2, TRS-80, and PET all came out in 77 and the early 80s saw multiple other entries like the VIC20/Commodore 64, Atari 8 bit computers, and the IBM PCs and its compatible clones. By the 90s most of these computer manufacturers were getting out or going bankrupt as the standard had become the IBM PC compatibles for most of the market, especially small businesses.
By the very late 90s early 2000s the market was flooded and the manufactures started going out of business and or showing signs of stress
In the Mid to late 90s the market was very well, prosperous and alive, as well as all the retailers with the new Windows machines.
Electronics stores and computer stores were almost on every corner in America, major retailers had large departments showing their wares from abundant windows, PC manufacturers. No way was the industry stressed at that time.
It was at this time really taking off with Windows 95 hitting the market. at least that’s how I remember it. That’s when computers started becoming a household name and the Internet sprang to life.
Retail stores were packed every weekend, weeknight and holidays.
Maybe other experiences with different, but my world was a more affluent area of the New York metropolitan area known as Long Island.
As posted in the link below, it was the Internet Era where PC exploded

From 1990 to the year 2000 Internet usage exploded 16,000% that was a healthy market then. The reason for that explosion was the Internet browsers from Netscape and Windows.
