Tell me about Wolfs Head Oil

I have a chance to by 3 cases of wolfs head (2) 10w30 and (1) 5w30 for about $2.50 a bottle. The fellow just wants to get rid of it since he is moving cross Country and does not want to mess with it. I did a search and wolfs head is just not talked about, other than one UOA on sae40 in a boat.

Is this as good as the average $3 oil from the autoparts store of is this a cheap-o oil. If I get it I will be using it in my silverado 4.8L

its a decent oil, the only place i've ever seen it for sale at is Carquest.


A buddy of mine use to use it in his truck when he got it the guy who sold it to him gave him a case so thats what he used in it.


I'm not sure its worth 2.50 a bottle though.

then again i can't remember what it used to cost, so it could very well be that price now.

Wolf's Head is one of the older oil brands that came out of PA. Pennzoil use to own Wolf's Head but when Shell bought Pennzoil they sold the Wolf's Head brand to Amalie Oil in Tampa. So, Wolf's Head is now owned by Amalie Oil and is made in Tampa, FL. It is still a decent oil. Offer him $2.00 per quart.

While I think its a decent oil, I wouldn't give more than $2 a quart, especially when you can get quality oils at Walmart for close to that (in the 5 qt. jug).

used WH in the early 70's cause it was the cheapest I could find--no more than 2 bucks aquart, and that is top dollar

It's on sale at our local ACO hardware for $1.88 a quart.

Go up to $1.50 .
Otherwise,forget it.
By the time you would use it, new oil formulations will be out.

Seems to have held up quite well in my boat, however it didnt get very many hours on it. I think the previous owner used it for quite a while and the engines seem to be running very well with 550 hours on them.

Switched oil because, like you, I just couldn't find any info on it anywhere.

My local GM parts dept. carries Wolf Head for Dexron VI. I never checked on the price or looked into it. I'll look next time I'm there and ask about it.

I've used it in the past and used the ATF with no issues in the Wife's 03 Grand AM GT R/A. If you buy the oil in bulk cases(12 pack) it will be cheaper from a distributor if you can find it. My friend keeps a healthy stock of it as it has been proven to be good enough for his customers and less expensive so he passes the savings on to them.

I think its a good oil,or at least it was when Shell owned it.I used it when our Laneco (now Giant) up here used to sell it for .99 cents a quart.

I still think its a good oil, 10.5cst@100 and -39/-42 for either superduty or synthetic, lots of certs to.

I shot an email over to them wondering if they can provide some insight to additives used, a long shot but who knows.

It say`s on the Wolfs Head site they now have 5W-20/30 Synthetic. So I went to order some,and cant locate it on the Amalie site?

I've been trying to find the stuff around here as I would like to start using it, but I havn't had any luck. I remember when I was a kid, there were still a few garages around here that used it, but they've all switched to Pennzoil or Valvoline.

Wow, it's changed hands a few times.
I bought a quart for top off when I first got my license, and it said Ashland on the back.
This was in early '99.

I have been running there dexron/mercon in my escape trans for 30000 miles. we also used a couple cases in our shop recently seems to be good stuff,the local auto parts used to carry it before napa bought them out, I noticed they now sell the engine oil in our local aco hardware. It was avery popular brand back in the old days.

I agree right now AAP is selling Havoline Oil and a Purolator filter for $12.99, if you figure the filter is worth $3, that brings the oil to $2 a qt. PB had even a better deal on Valvoline I think. $2 a qt is no bargain for Wolfs Head oil. Now if it is a synthetic oil, it's a deal. JMO
