I keep seeing refrences to Techron raising lead levels in UOA. Related questions.

Is this true and if so, if this refering to the additive in their gasoline or only in the pour in additive?

BTW, this sort of related to the old bit that says only use fuel additives just before you change your oil.

I've been using Techron for a few years and have never seen a difference in lead numbers on the UOA. Lead comes in around 1-3PPM depending on the car. Maybe the engine is already clean

I even purposely ran a tankful prior to sending a sample.

I've seen this answered by Chevron people. There is absolutely no lead in Techron.
At the same time I can tell you that I never see lead levels even slightly high in the 7 gasoline cars and pickups that I have and I use Techron at every oil change.

I think we have seen UOA that showed high lead and was throught to be Techron. I would guess it could break up deposits on a engine that had not used it before and had lots of miles. I would guess this is the likely reason for the Techron and Lead which we have seen in UOA's.

so where did the lead come from originally? Could these have to have come from:

>lead soldered/brazed pipes or fuel systems; or
>have used leaded gas from 1973(?) or prior.

Some have speculated that it is bearing wear from the uneven firing of the various cylinders as they go through unbalanced thrust frequencies during the cleaning. That is, as cc's and injectors clean at different rates.

I dunno how much there is to that ..but some appear to not show the Pb level in subsequent UOAs ..so ..

Hi,
I have not seen this "phenomenen"

Check in the UOA section under Porsche 928
where there are eight (8) UOAs using two quite different high quality synthetic lubricants;

Shell Helix Ultra 15w-50 (SJ/CF) (13.6k kms OCI)and,
Delvac 1 5w-40 (CH-4/SJ)(19.1k kms OCI)

There is no evidence of increased Lead due to Techron which was used as recommended by Porsche throughout each OCI

Regards
Doug

I know that everytime I used Techron in my 98 chevy truck with the 5.7L, I had high lead levels in my oil analysis. It might have been coincidence but that was the only different factor during those oil runs. I don't use it anymore because of that.

No lead problems in the few UOA I've done ('01 F150 and '04 Mazda6i) and I use a bottle of Techron a week or two prior to every oil change.
