I had a ’92 Taurus with 156,000 miles that I sold earlier to a single mom friend. It was a great running car and I never had any problems with it, so I had no problem selling it to a friend. Well at about 140,000 I had the transmission flushed and pan dropped and new filter. This was after running Auto-Rx thru it. Prior to the service, it would surge in low speed, up hill driving, kind of like it was trying to decide between 2nd/3rd gear. After the Rx and service, that went away and it ran like a champ. Now it is back and I’m wondering if there is something else I should try. I was thinking of adding some Lubegard. Thanks for your input.

Sounds like maybe the speed sensor; they are problematic on some Taurus'. If you have cruise control does it surge in 4th gear in cruise control, especially before the transmission has warmed up? Once you get into 4th does it run pretty smoothly with cruise control off? The one thing I can't figure out is, if it is bad, how come it hasn't become more pronounced after this long of showing signs of trouble.

No surging in 4th gear. Only in very low speeds and 2nd to 3rd gear. It's acts like it wants to shift out of 2nd gear, but then finds that 3rd gear is too high and wants to drop back to second. Seems almost like it should wait to shift from 2nd at a higher rpm. That could be speed sensor problem, but wouldn't it appear in other gears? I had the fuel filter changed and injectors cleaned prior to the transmission service, with no improvement. I noticed an improvement after Auto-Rx had been in it awhile and then after the fluid was replaced. That's why I'm leaning towards a transmission issue. The speed sensor is inside the housing, so could the fluid change help it out?

My wifes 97 taurus does the same thing, only when cold, once it warms up it is fine, this all started about a year ago and about 1000 miles after a flush, I don't know if it's related but makes me wonder. I talked to a guy at a transmission shop and he said it sounds like the boost valve in the valve body is worn, a common problem on these transmissions, and you have to pull the transmission to get at the valve body because the pump shaft rides through it. The wife has been manually shifting it up through the gears for a year now until it warms up, then it's fine, at 125,000 miles she will drive it till it drops!
axod transmission and 3.0v6? see if you bumped the tv cable out of its housing one day (mounted to a plate near the throttle) that will make it do weird things
My dad's 01 Taurus also does the same thing. I guess Ford never bother fixing it.
