In Chicago we would be a dual income family forever. My mortgage is $2200 per month. It's so hard to get ahead.
I've remodeled my home myself over the past two years and have 200k in equity.
We're going to be 100% debt free at age 32 and my wife can raise our children.
It's a proud moment for me.

Greenville/Spartanburg is a nice area. As you noted your cost of living will be reduced significantly. I expect especially in the winter you will appreciate the climate change too. And any vehicle rust concerns will be in the rear view.
A couple/few years ago another member moved from the Hudson Valley area of NY, to just up I85 from Greenville/Spartanburg to Gastonia NC. Afaik, he's been happy with the decision.

The Great Lakes Navel base is about 40 minutes north from me. I'm been on base before and am somewhat familiar with the area. If you have any questions let me know.

If you're not moving backwards, you're moving forwards. Nice. Seems you have well thought this all out, weighed the pros/cons logically and made a decision. Unless you absolutely love cold winters, I can't see how you won't like SC. One thing that may take some getting use to is the summer and humidity. Worrying is just what us husbands/dads do.....it will happen...be patient grasshopper.

Welcome to SC! You will like the upstate area of SC (I'm in the Pee Dee area, east of Greenville about 2-3 hours). Lots of opportunity in that area, along the I-85 corridor. You will love the Cost of Living. Live in the county and not the city: big tax advantage, better for kids. Churches everywhere, most people really are accomodating. Not sure how much you drive, but its a way of life here. If you see someone walking, its because their car is broken, repossessed or they got a DUI.
I had a verbal and emailed offer. I received a phone call the other day that the position was no long available to me. Unethical, but I'm at that individuals mercy.
We just placed our house on the market and had interest. We notified our friends and family as well. It's been a rough week for the household.
