Does the base oil have any effect on mitigating the effects of corrosion because of water accumulation in oil? If not, what are the additives that do combat corrosion?

Sb I believe is anti-corrosive.

I too would be interested in what basestocks work better, if any.

Could also be that a heavier oil that will be slower to migrate off a surface/leave a thicker film might be the superior choice.

Good question for guys like MolaKule and Tom NJ. I've heard MolaKule mention some additives being oxidation and rust inhibitors. Yes, when it comes to base oils, you would think maintaining TBN and resisting acids would be important.

I prefer an oil that maintains its viscosity over time, so it's never too thin or thick. I'd use thicker oil for hot-running engines and storage.

Yes, I was just going to say 4-stroke Marine oil is fantastic for corrosion resistance.

Specifically: "Excellent Anti-Rust Performance
Marine engines are prone to rust, leading to uncontrolled wear and premature engine failure. However, good rust protection is not natural to engine oil. It comes only by design. Formula 4-Stroke® Marine Synthetic Motor Oil is fortified with a special anti-rust agent, even more than required to pass stringent NMMA FC-W anti-rust testing."

^ That + lots more to read here... the 10w30 flavor: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/wct.aspx

Flash Point: 457!
NOACK Volitility: 4.8%
HTHS: 3.64
TBN: 10.5

I have always wanted to blend some of this in with quality auto oil...

OP: What's your application/situation?

When is the last time any of you saw corrosion inside a engine??? For me it was a engine that laid outside in the weather, I don't think any oil would have helped it... Mostly corrosion in a automotive engine is a non issue...

For engines that are infrequently run, it's probably more of an issue. Garage queen type cars.

Based on simple UOA's, looking inside cylinders, and investigation of oil filter contents I've had done on my car (driven very infrequently) and boat (stored over the winter), corrosion is happening, just a matter of "is it enough to be a problem?"

I think corrosion resistance is mostly in the additives than the base oil. In fact, I have read PAO synthetics base stocks do not deal with moisture quite as well as some dino oils but it doesn't seem to be an issue. An expensive PAO oil is usually accompanied by a top drawer additive package, so and differences in the base oil are probably moot.

Right. I've never seen it in decades of real experience.

[Non running stored stuff in improper conditions doesn't count. Neither does external rust on oil pans, valve covers, and such]

No doubt but I've never worried about it then... My '69 Fairlane Cobra & I are coming up on 39 years of marriage, and she often sets in the garage for several months without being romanced, while I'm out with some of my younger girl friends...
