Synthetic or Dino for short trips - new Sonata?

this profile is like the definition of mobil's "aunt millie" test. judging from that test, if warranty considerations were not an issue, i would say pick your fav synth and run it for 10k regardless of time (or put a 5 year limit on it). there are hard numbers in the aunt millie test to back up this view.

since warranty is a concern, i would take the car to walmart every 7500 (what, they are gonna measure your trips?) or whatever time period is used for the regular service interval, and use either the walmart synth or whatever SM grade oil brand you prefer, and keep your reciepts. at 7500 OCI, any SM grade oil should handle this.

... (except Hyundai's severe service mileage recommendation is 3,000, not 3,250 miles). ...

Well, my 2004 Elantra's & 2005 Tucson Service cards say 3750 (not 3250, sorry) for severe, 7500 for normal.

What do your respective owner's manuals say? I get that 3,750 mile nonsense in the mail from several area dealerships, too, but the real scoop is what Hyundai went to the trouble to print in the owner's manual maintenance section - and that's information you can bank on for warranty purposes. If your '04 and '05 owner's manuals state 3,750, then I stand corrected. But, my '03 Sonata owner's manual does state 3 mos./3,000 miles for severe service.

Yeah, Ray, my AccentGT states 3750/7500 with a 3000 mile OCI for severe.

Like you said.

Nonsense. But, with the tyranny of the warranty hanging over all of our heads, whaddya gonna dooo?

The warranty states 3000mile oil change interbval for severe service.

1.) She is in a warmer climate.
2.) He application is not severe.

And I recommend that she make time to take it out on the highway for a Sunday drive at least twice a month irregardless of the oil used.
